Maslenitsa Celebration - Russian spring festival
The name of the festival comes from the Russian word for butter, “maslo.”.
But the roots of this festival go deep into the ancient pagan culture. Slavonic people believed that they had to help Yarilo, god of the sun to struggle against winter (cold and darkness).
The Maslenitsa Pancake
Blini(s) are Russian pancakes, and they are important and typical treat to celebrate Maslenitsa.
Bini(s) symbolize the sun – being warm, round, and golden.
You can eat pancakes with sour cream, honey, condensed milk, jam or caviar.
The Maslenitsa Pancake
Maslenitsa lasts 7 days. During this time people get together, have a great time laughing and dancing, bake and eat delicious pancakes, visit their friends and host parties at their homes.
Maslenitsa usually starts a week before Lent.
It is known as “ maslenitsa week”, “ butter week”, “ “Russian carnival week”, or “pancake week”.

Fist Fighting (Thursday)
Group fistfights is a part of the interesting tradition of Maslenitsa. In ancient times everyone (even women) went outside and participated in fistfights.
In the ancient times in Russia during Maslenitsa the Petrushka’s (Punch) comedies were quite popular. had a great success because of their simplicity and their satiric character.
Usually such performances began with a loud laughter or a song from behind the curtain and after that Petrushka appeared. He was dressed up in a red shirt, velvet trousers , dandy boots and a fancy cap on his head.

Bonfires and Maslenitsa
Sunday
Once again, everyone gathers for an unforgettable sleigh ride. Afterwards, people lit bonfires and burn a straw maiden or a scarecrow.
This is the way to say farewell to the long and boring winter and to welcome spring.
Sunday is also called “Farewell” or “Forgiving Sunday”.
Following the Christian tradition , it is important to ask your relatives, friends, loved ones for forgiveness on this day.

About 400 years ago, there was a man named Guy Fawkes. He and some other people from his gang didn’t like the king’s religious policy and decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament with the help of gunpowder.
Fortunately, on the morning of November 5, the plot
was discovered and Guy Fawkes was arrested. He was
put on a bonfire and burned to death.
Now, every year, people in UK light huge bonfires on
the night of 5 to burn the ‘Guy,’ Children and their
parents make this guy out of old clothes, stuffed
paper and straw.
In the evening people get together to watch the fireworks and eat traditional Guy Fawkes Night food. Baked potatoes and toffee apples are the most popular treats..
