Safety Moment

Slips, Trips and Falls

  • According to the Health & Safety Executive, Slips, trips, and falls accounted for around a third of employee injuries in 2020/21.
  • They are the most common cause of non-fatal workplace injury. Falls from height are the most common cause of fatalities.
  • Statistics don’t exaggerate; these injuries all happened to real people while at work.
  • Both employers and employees have a duty to protect people’s wellbeing at work. In order to prevent slips, trips, and falls, employers must put in place control measures and procedures for preventing hazards from ever materialising, and it’s down to employees to uphold and follow them.
  • The HSE provides hazard spotting checklists, risk mapping tools and methodology for assessing risks. For more information go to www.hse.gov.uk/risk

Paris – Highlights and Industry Challenges

  • PS1 - Addressing protection related challenges in network with low-inertia and low fault current levels
    • Are current setting adequate
    • Changes in relay settings can mitigate issues
    • How to manage settings in an evolving grid
    • Simulation can be advantageous
    • Most important lesson – understand your grid and relays

Paris – Highlights and Industry Challenges

  • PS2 - Applications of emerging technology for protection, automation and control
    • Challenges –
      • DSAS and LPIT – Architecture (HSR/PRP), AIS, GIS, PIU ?
      • Staff training and availability,
      • Up take of technology,
      • Technology obsolescence management,
      • Time sync,
      • Industry adoption – moving beyond pilots
    • Benefits –
      • Centralised P&C=>Virtualisation
      • Standardisation - reduction in engineering and installation time
      • Remote maintenance and testing
      • Standards development

    • Large scale REN adoption has provided opportunity to trial, test and adopt new PAC technologies.

Paris – Highlights and Industry Challenges

  • PS3 - Integration of intelligence on substations (Joint PS with B3)
    • Hybrid solutions makes testing more complex – need appropriate tools, user friendly
    • Backwards compatibility in products and tools
    • Patching / Upgrades i.e., cyber maybe more frequent
    • Standardisation
    • Collaboration between users and suppliers
    • Reduce cost and time through whole project

To deal with complex future automation, data points and grid/system level stability: Trending towards discrete protection at local level with system level WAMS to guide local decision

Feedback - UK Topics of Interest

  • Centralised Protection – This is also widening into “virtualised protection”– move from D to T?
  • Changing roles DNO to DSO etc – dealing with boundaries
  • Use of Digital Twins
  • Operation of distance protection with the increase on REN. Will the current algorithms respond correctly Impact of Cyber Security on PAC`s?
  • Continuing evolvement of IEC standards
  • Need for Standardisation
  • Backwards Compatibility – Ease of Upgrade – Patching
  • Cyber
  • Need for Standard and Easily Useable Tools
  • Process bus roll out – when and at what voltage will it become business as usual?
  • Integration of Protection and Communication systems
  • Need for Training & Recruitment
