WORLD WAR I

In 1914, the global competition for land & colonies (IMPERIALISM), coupled with NATIONALISM & MILITARISM led the world into war. The final spark came in Sarajevo when a Serbian nationalist assassinated ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Within days, the complex system of ALLIANCES that bound European countries together had dragged the continent into battle.
