What is Farm to School?

GO

Farm to school in a nutshell is basically buying locally grown foods, or growing food yourself, to both feed and teach, cooking and tasting locally grown foods, and learning about and through locally grown foods and food producers. We want to emphasize today that farm to school doesn’t have to drop off during the winter. We tend to think that the farming season is over come winter, but every season is important in the cycle of how food is produced. There is real educational value in connecting to seasonal changes and completing the circle, looking at the full cycle. Plus, we live in Georgia, where it is actually possible for us to grow food year round! So, you can even in winter still get locally grown foods by purchasing them from a farmer in your community, or by growing them yourself! And there is still a lot to learn about the cycle of food production in relation to changing seasons. To reiterate, we think the best farm to school programs include learning about and through local foods and how they’re grown, eating local foods, and engaging with your community around local foods. Hands-on activities like cooking, taste testing and gardening engage students in different learning modalities and are fun ways for students to learn the education standards they need to learn, as well as learn about the impact of their food choices on their health, their community and the local economy.

How does frost affect plants?

As ice crystals form between cells, the water inside the cells is drawn out through the cell walls. This causes the cells to get smaller. The resulting pressure and stress may cause the walls to break.

If the temperature drop is sudden and extreme, ice crystals may form inside the cells of some species rupturing the cell protoplasm and killing the cell in this way.

There is also another way that a plant suffers freeze damage. When freezing temperatures are reached, ice crystals form in the water between cell walls. When temperatures rise and the ice begins to thaw, water will return back into the shrunken cell. If this happens quickly, the cells may burst. This destroys the cells. Frost, causes the water in plant cells to freeze, damaging the cell wall.

Hardy plants and tough evergreens can also be damaged by prolonged spells of severe cold when soil becomes frozen. Roots are unable to take up water and plants die from lack of moisture.
