The VetBros Transition Project

The VetBros Pet Education Charitable Fund (PECF) is teaming up with Central Bark Doggie Daycare and Carol Stream Animal Hospital to implement renewable/green energy consumption into their facilities in hopes of influencing the pet industry to be more environmentally responsible.

TRANSITIONING THE PET INDUSTRY TO BE SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT

4 of 21

Climate change is one of the greatest public health threats of the twenty-first century. The pet industry has had a strong desire to promote environmental sustainability within our industry but lacks the resources available to make an impact.

The VetBros PECF is teaming up with Green 2 Gold to support the pet industry in learning about and taking action to decrease its environmental footprint.

PETS PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN OUR LIVES, IT’S TIME TO PROTECT THEM

5 of 21

.The Transition Project is the environmental initiative that is helping the pet industry upgrade their facilities (veterinary hospitals, doggie daycare, pet stores, animal shelters, etc.) in order to reduce their general waste and energy consumption.

The pet industry has always highlighted their own concerns about the impact that climate change has on the pets we care for and care about.

It is time for our industry to lead by example, the Transition Project provides the tools and guidance needed to make our industry be a leader in environmental sustainability and resilience.

The VetBros Transition Project

The VetBros PECF is working to advance sustainability in the pet industry in several different ways.

First, we are working with the pet food industry to promote a

more responsible pet food consumer.

There are approximately 90 million dogs that live in the United States, which consume about 36 million pounds of meat protein each year.

This enormous meat consumption is the reason we want to promote a more sustainable solution, such as cricket protein.

.Second, the VetBros are also working with responsible pet toy manufacturers.

The pet toy industry is a billon-dollar-a-year business leaving a large carbon footprint.

We are working with companies like Time4Pets and Toy’nGreen which are focused on creating the greenest pet toy products on the market helping to leave a smaller carbon “PAWprint” and thus reduce the negative effects to our environment.

.Third, VetBros is working to educate to our youth about the effects of climate change on wildlife and our pets.

Rise in ambient temperatures cause an increase in body temperatures which can lead to high risk for heat stroke (heat exhaustion).

Our focus will also be on the effects of climate change and the resulting natural disasters. By understanding the role that we play in increasing the frequency of catastrophic natural disasters is key helping curb them in the future.

Preparing for natural disasters, knowing how to find and use resources, and understanding which pets are at high risk of being abandoned and/or displaced with natural disasters is key to helping lessen the impact of these disasters.
