KEY HIGHLIGHTS

NELSON AIRPORT

The Nelson Airport terminal is a striking example of innovative timber construction and seismic design. It features a timber frame with an engineered design that allows the structure to absorb seismic forces. The terminal also incorporates a folded plate roof, prefabrication techniques, and natural ventilation, showcasing a commitment to both structural efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Timber Frame:

The primary structure of the building is built with engineered timber, specifically laminated veneer lumber (LVL).

• LVL Columns:

LVL columns support the roof, and the three-dimensional portal system, using beams and rafters, provides diaphragm action to create a folded structural roof plane.

Seismic Resilience:

The terminal utilizes a resilient friction slip joint system on the LVL columns, allowing the structure to flex and absorb seismic forces with minimal damage. It also incorporates Tectonus seismic dampers.

NELSON PINE INDUSTRIES LTD

The Nelson region provides the perfect environment for sustainable forestry, where our log suppliers manage plantations of radiata pine. NPIL uses the wood to make two high performance building materials – Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) – that slots right into our high-tech age. Using a sustainable resource, we can supply the material to construct multi-story buildings out of LVL, and fill them with panels, floors and furniture made of MDF.

GoldenEdge® MDF and NelsonPine® LVL are recognised as leading brands in New Zealand and in worldwide export markets. This parallel status is based on the strategy of consistent, high-quality products delivered to key markets by reliable and frequent shipping services.

NPIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sumitomo Forestry Company Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan. The Sumitomo Group was established in Japan in 1691, in the field of mineral exploration. The Sumitomo Forestry Company Ltd. (SFC) was formed in 1948 and is now one of Japan’s largest forestry-based companies. SFC markets NPIL’s MDF and LVL in Japan and other Asian countries. The Japanese emphasis on quality and service meant these core values became intrinsically woven into the culture at NPIL.

RED STAG WOOD SOLUTIONS LIMITED

Red Stag Wood Solutions' CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) plant manufactures large, engineered wood panels used in construction. These panels, made by layering timber at 90-degree angles and bonding them with adhesive, are a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel in mid-rise and high-rise buildings. The plant also produces GLT (Glue Laminated Timber) for columns, beams, and lintels, along with frame and truss solutions.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

• CLT Production:

The plant focuses on producing CLT panels, which are used for walls, floors, roofs, and stairs in construction projects.

• GLT Production:

Red Stag also manufactures GLT, a type of engineered wood product that is used for structural components like columns and beams.

• Prefabrication:

The company offers pre-fabricated frame and truss solutions, streamlining the construction process.
