  • Free fall into basement

Methodology: The Brick

  • Need to find force and velocity that the brick hits Marv so need to measure the brick’s mass, height of building, height of Marv
  • Mass of brick: 2.27 kilograms
  • Height of Marv: 1.93 meters
  • Height of building: ?

Count the Marvs (There were 5 Marvs)

Height of building: 5*1.93= 9.65 meters

Methodology: Free Fall Problem

  • To find force that Marv and Harry hit the floor, need to find the masses of both men, the height of the fall, and the time it took to hit the ground
  • Harry’s mass: 63 kilograms
  • Marv’s mass: 98 kilograms
  • Time: 2.89 seconds
  • Total Height: ?

Total Height

  • Stair height + height of basement from floor to ceiling
  • Average stair height: 0.1905 meters
  • Marv was on the 7th stair so 0.1905*7= 1.3335 meters
  • Harry was on the 8th stair so 0.1905*8= 1.524 meters
  • Height of basement was ‘count the Marvs’, so two Marvs fit the height of the basement
  • 1.93*2= 3.86 meters
  • Marv’s total height: 5.1935 meters
  • Harry’s total height: 5.384 meters

So… Would Harry and Marv Die?

  • For the brick problem, it takes 520 pounds to crack a skull which is 2313 Newtons
  • It wouldn’t kill Marv, however, would leave him with more injuries or a possible concussion

So… Would Harry and Marv Die?

  • Falling is fatal at 48 feet, or about 14 meters
  • Neither Harry nor Marv fell 14 meters, however they would’ve gotten the wind knocked out of them, or could get knocked out from the impact
  • While I wanted my hypothesis to be true, Kevin McCallister is not a murderer
