大多數是表示自己對某句話或是某件事之激賞，也表示對他人之舉動感謝、感激他為你所做之事，也表示準備妥當，例如藍球比賽時裁判會一手執球一手豎大姆指表示一切就緒，比賽可以進行了，這是源自飛機駕駛員在飛機升空待發時，由於引擎聲音巨大無法與地勤人員溝通，於是就用豎大姆指的方式表示： I am ready!(我已經準備好了！)
