Spread across more than 100 acres in Utah's Fishlake National Forest stand tens of thousands of quaking aspen trunks. They look like an ordinary forest. They are, in fact, a single organism sharing one enormous root system.

Every 'tree' is a clone
Each trunk is genetically identical, sprouted from the same connected roots underground. What looks like separate trees is really one plant sending up thousands of stems — like blades of grass from one lawn.

Pando is struggling. Grazing deer and elk eat the young shoots before they can grow, so few new trunks replace the old. One of the largest, oldest living things on Earth is slowly thinning out on our watch.
