Comparing Quantities Sold 2017 vs 2018

Process & Analysis

  • Quantity sold graph shows which item categories are the most popular
  • Allows us to see what sub categories increased/decreased in sales between 2017 and 2018
  • Quantity sold graph is directly proportional to the profit graph

Insights

  • Fresh produce is most popular from 2017-2018
  • Miscellaneous items and bags sold the least
  • Flowers doubled in sales from 2017-2018 → potential for high growth in sales

Suggestions

  • Stop selling miscellaneous items and bags

Focus of our Analysis

  • Our focus: Fresh Produce
    • Why? Makes up majority of the stores’ sales (~50%)
  • Fresh produce sales decreased drastically from 2017-2018
    • ~13.5% decrease in quantity and profit.
    • Significance: Fresh produce should be the main area of focus

Insights

  • Analyzed specific subcategories of the fresh produce
    • From 2017-2018, the quantities of every subcategory and the average unit selling price decreased.

→ Decreasing the price overall did not cause customers to buy more

Suggestions

  • Store should be more intentional about when to change the price of produce
    • To determine how the store should mark their prices, we analyzed the store’s sales by hour, week, and season

Profit by Hour

Insights

  • Early and late store hours (before 7 am and after 11 pm) tend to not have much profit
    • Implausible to improve sales during very early/late store hours
  • In both years, busiest store hour is around 11 am
    • Sales remain high until around 5 pm
  • Sales decline significantly after 5 pm
    • Focus on improving sales between 5 - 7 pm (closing hours)

Suggestions

  • Last Minute Discounts
    • Mark down price of produce between 5 - 7 pm to increase sales during closing hours

Profit by Day

7

Process & Analysis

  • Looked at the produce sold throughout the week to see how sales change depending on the day of the week
    • Which day of the week is the busiest?
  • Chose to focus on the 3 most sold produce items: bananas, melons, and potatoes

Insights

  • Saturday is the busiest and most profitable, Sunday is the least
  • Consumer behaviors: Saturday is the most popular day for grocery shopping
    • Can infer this is because it is most convenient on the weekend

Suggestions

  • To attract more customers on weekdays and Sundays, mark higher discount on those days

Produce Per Month

Process & Analysis

  • Chose to analyze the produce sold per month to determine if there were seasonal changes in quantities sold
  • Analyzed the top 3 sold produce for each month

Insights

  • During Australia’s summer (Dec-Feb), stone fruits and melons were sold the most
  • During autumn and winter (March-Aug), grapes and potatoes were sold the most
  • During spring (Sept-Nov), highest sales were a mix of winter and summer produce (i.e.melons and potatoes)
  • These trends are expected
    • People eat more summer fruits in the summer when they are in season
    • In the winter, holidays like Christmas drive demand for pantry staples and potatoes
    • Bananas are Australia’s most popular fruit → sales are consistently high every month

9 of 11

Suggestions

  • Provide a higher discount for seasonal produce
    • Ex: Increase the discount for melons and fruits in the summer
  • Keep price of bananas fixed because they are consistently popular throughout the year
    • Occasional discounts on bananas to help compete with nearby stores
  • Increase the price of potatoes slightly in the summer because demand is the highest (holiday season) and supply is the lowest

Overall Solutions

  • “Last Minute Discounts”: Mark down price of produce between 5 - 7 pm to increase sales during closing hours
  • Keep a higher discount on weekdays and Sundays to attract customers then
  • Increase the discount for melons and seasonal fruits in the summer
  • Change prices of bananas only to compete with nearby stores
  • Increase the price of potatoes in the summer when demand is highest and supply is lowest
