First impressions of US

  • When I first arrived in United states I was mesmerized with the big buildings ,the amount of flags all over the place ,the trees ,the streets even the driver's seat in cars was on the opposite side .The amount of food that they serve in restaurants .

Geography and location

  • Mozambique is situated in the south east coast of the African continent .
  • Mozambique covers an area of 800,000 sq km .Three times the great britain .
  • Total provinces: 11.
  • Capital: Maputo .
  • Climate: tropical and subtropical .The climate plains and along the coast is warm and humid ; the mountainous areas are cooler although at times equally wet .A hot ,rainy season lasts from october to april .the rest of the year has a more moderate climate ,with the coolest months june and july .Max:: 30 degrees .

  • Between 1st and 5th century AD (200/400) Bantu speaking people migrate and settle in Mozambique.
  • 1498 Vasco da Gama first arrived in Mozambique
  • 18th and 19th centuries Mozambique becomes major slave trading center
  • 1500-1700 portuguese expansion and Mozambique becomes a direct colony of portugal
  • 1942 portuguese people start losing provinces
  • 1962-1964 Creation of FRELIMO ( Mozambique liberation front) headed by Eduardo Mondlane and initiation of a guerrilla campaign against portuguese rule
  • 1964-1974 war for independence
  • 25 june of 1975 assigned and official independence day.

Traditional Cuisine

  • Heavily influenced by the portugueses (crops,spices and cooking methods).
  • Oftenly served along with sauces made of vegetables ,meat ,beans or fish.
  • Most of the dishes often cooked with typical ingredients such as :cashew nuts ,coconut,garlic..
  • Abundant variety of seafood due the easy accessibility to the sea .

Fun facts and corrections

  • We do not speak French in Mozambique !
  • The country was named by the portugueses after the island of Mozambique ,derived from Mussa Bin Bique or Mossa al Bique an arab trader who first visited and later lived there .
  • Our country is the only country in the world which sports a firearm on their flag.
  • Colonization for 470 years
