Throughout history of aviation humans have been working in order to fix and maintain aircraft. During the beginning of aviation times most crashes were due to technological failures, while in current times most failures have been due to human factors. The main human factors can be classified by the dirty dozen, which include most of the common issues that humans do.

This includes distractions, pressure, norms, lack of knowledge , etc. These issues now cause a majority of all airplane crashes and very rarely crashes are due to the airplane and more on how people repaired or flew the airplane.

Background

An enormous thanks to The Port Authority of NY & NJ, A New JFK, York College, Delta, American Airlines, JFK Millennium Partners and The New Terminal JFK International Airport, whose research grants made this STEM project possible.

Pilots are ale affected by human factors, the pilots can be used to norms or short cuts which are not approved risking lives. Also the tremendous stress and pressure that the plots can be on may interfere with their way of thinking creating Them to think less radically and more on how they feel or what they might do. Human factors effect everyone not just AMT’s but all work in all profetions

Pilots being effected

The peak alertness of most humans is around 8 Pm as shown by the chart, this however is not good since most long flights span over the night or most repairs happen at night in order to deduce time not flying.THe chart shows us how soon after the peak alertness the focus and alertness drops significantly. This human factor is known as fatigue and this is major since we may pass over a step or do something we would have not normally done if we were thinking well, but we do it as we are tired and we are drained of energy to care about the small things. This factor of working at late hours and not being focused is also seen as some airlines have not realized corrosion or cracked that caused crashes as they were tasked to work and maintain the aircraft during the hours of their lowest alertness.

This image illustrates how over time and airplane

technology has developed more of the issues lie on the people. Machines have done a near perfect job of working how they should be today , while before most issues where due to the plane having technological issues. While now we can see how humans impacted crashes and issues, over the years the technology has gotten so advanced that now the only real reason why we may crash is due to a mechanic not doing their job properly or a pilot making a mistake.

One very major crash that was due to a simple error made by the mechanic was the crash of the concord in 2000. The concord was one of the safest and most technologically advanced airplanes of its time, however one flight after going for take off a fire has started on the plane after the fuel tank has been raptured. The reputation of the fuel take was due to the exploded tire creating a impact on it. Later as it was tested a strange metal object was found what caused the tire to explode, this small metal part came from another plane which has flown off shorty before the concord. When inspecting the plane it was found that a metal part was missing and that part caused the horrific crash. while this part was small and did not affect the plane it was attached to the AMT made a human factor error that caused the part to get detached and left behind on the runway causing planes to experience accidents and harm.
