We are a grassroots movement fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence in America.

We know that gun violence is preventable.

We’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe.

Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, and the Everytown Survivor Network are all grassroots arms of Everytown for Gun Safety.

Collectively, we are the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with over 11 million supporters.

We aim to achieve that through action:

Federal and state legislative action: We work to get stronger gun laws passed and work to close loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families.

Local Government & partnership engagement: We work with community partners and business leaders to address the underlying causes of community gun violence and encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership.

Electoral Action at every government level: We work to elect Candidates who will fight for sensible gun laws. In 2024, 625 Moms Demand Action Volunteers ran for public office & 330 won! Since 2021, when we rolled out the “Claim a Seat Program”. Almost 500 volunteers across 40 states have won seats at local, state & federal levels.

School safety & Public Education: Our Be SMART & Secure Storage program has been adopted by numerous school systems throughout the country. Duval was the first public school system in FL to adopt it. Hand in hand with the Sandy Hook Promise Say Something Program, this adds another layer of safety to our schools. Your job is to get Nassau to adopt these two programs

Training Volunteers, Public Education & Awareness

Everytown has extensive resource for our volunteers. There are also resources available to the public through Everytown Research, Every Stat, Be SMART for kids & Secure Storage websites.

Create Awareness: #Momsareeverywhere. In addition to meetings like this, we meet with our legislators ( Advocacy Day & legislative breaks, write LTE, march, active on social media).

Guns don’t make us safer

The U.S. gun suicide rate is almost 12 x that of other high-income countries

Much of the increase in the number of firearms in this country is due to the belief that they are needed for personal protection - These purchasers are the least likely to take any training on firearm use & safety. But the mere presence of a gun in the home increases the chance that someone in that home will be shot., suicide, domestic violence, unintentional shootings We also know that some populations are disproportionally affected by gun violence, Black Americans are 12x more likely than White Americans to die by gun violence. LGBTQ+ population are targets for gun violence.

In 20% domestic violence incidents, children, other family members, by-standers &/or law enforcement are shot & killed. Domestic Violence response calls are considered the most dangerous calls for police.

Suicide by Gun Prevention: Extreme Risk Protection Order

Attempting suicide with a gun almost always results in death. Most people survive suicide attempts if other means are used & 70-85% who survive do not attempt again. Most contemplate suicide for only 10 mins before making an attempt, so removing weapons or putting a barrier ( gun safe, gun lock) between the gun & a distressed person) saves lives https://onethingyoucando.org/florida/

A risk protection order (RPO or ERPO) is a court order that temporarily restricts a person’s access to guns when they pose a significant danger to themselves or others. It is designed to help law enforcement intervene quickly in dangerous situations. In Florida, only law enforcement can petition the court to issue an RPO, even though the family may have more firsthand knowledge of the risk profile. AND many Florida sheriffs, officers & legislators don’t believe in removing an individual’s firearms.

Secure Storage: THE Critical Step

Roughly 30 million children now live in homes with firearms, up 7 million since 2015. 4.6 million live in a home with at least one loaded & unsecure gun

Suicide historically was seen primarily in older white men. As we discussed the suicide rate among young people has increased almost every year since 2007 & is now at record highs. Three in four firearm suicides by young people take place in or around a home and over 80% of suicide by those under 18 involve a gun belonging to a family member. Moreover, ¾ of school shooter obtained their firearm from their home or that of a close relative.

Secure storage reduces the risk of family gun fire by 73%.

Secure storage is also a factor in fighting community gun violence. Most firearms used in crimes are obtained illegally, often stolen from vehicles. In fact, we don’t know how many guns are stolen, because many are not reported.

It is always the adult’s responsibility to keep firearms out of the hands of children. Hiding them is not securing them. There is a storage box and trigger locks for every type of weapon; for homes, for every make of vehicle.

Note: cable trigger locks are cheap but not recommended if there are older children , teens or at-risk adults in home. Biometric locks are best & affordable.

After Uvalde, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act funded mental health resources, such as psychologists, counselors, and other mental health workers for schools across the country. The Trump administration has rescinded those funds.

Community based violence interruption programs and support services for victims have been halted midstream. Many of these programs operated on a shoestring & had no time to make contingency plans. Beverly McClain, founder & CEO of Families of Slain Children, said: “when we talk of public safety, we often focus only on punishment. But real safety starts long before a crime happens & continues long after. Real safety means helping people heal and investing in what works to prevent violence in the first place. These programs don’t just help people heal; they reduce reliance on emergency services and the criminal justice system”.

Trump repealed the ATF’s zero tolerance policy, allowing reckless gun dealers who didn’t do background checks, thus selling to those who should not have weapons, and fostered straw purchases back in business . The policy of enforcing rules for gun sellers was a powerful tool combating gun trafficking. BTW, Florida is one of 3 top exporters (also Georgia and Texas) of legal & illegal guns to the Carribean, Central America & South America, increasing their gun violence problems & increasing immigration to the US due to safety issues in their home country.
