WALT: knowing the basic addition strategies and facts

2 of 6

What we need to remember

Addition is when we are bringing two (or more) new numbers together to get a larger sum.

When we know our bonds of ten, and can then extend it to twenty, it helps our understanding of adding larger tens numbers.

Knowing how many makes ten can help us to reach the next ten, and then we can add the remainder.

Bonds of ten

1 + _ = 10

2 + _ = 10

3 + _ = 10

4 + _ = 10

5 + _ = 10

6 + _ = 10

7 + _ = 10

8 + _ = 10

9 + _ = 10

Knowing what numbers make ten can help us add bigger numbers.

Bonds of twenty

1 + _ = 20

2 + _ = 20

3 + _ = 20

4 + _ = 20

5 + _ = 20

6 + _ = 20

7 + _ = 20

8 + _ = 20

9 + _ = 20

10 + _ = 20

11 + _ = 20

12 + _ = 20

13 + _ = 20

14 + _ = 20

15 + _ = 20

16 + _ = 20

17 + _ = 20

18 + _ = 20

19 + _ = 20

Making ten, then adding the remainder

We know what numbers make ten (bonds of ten), now we need to add beyond that.
