We were under a great depression in the USA….
My name is Scout Finch, at that time I was a six-year-old girl who lived with my father Atticus, a widower lawyer, and my brother Jem in a little village in Alabama…
My brother and I met a child who was called Dill and he turned into our best friend…..
I remember that we felt terror and at the same time fascination about our neighbour called “Boo” Radley. All the people in the village avoided speaking about this man so we fantasized on the reasons why “Boo” was always hidden…..
But the opinion about “Boo” changed in the village when Atticus, my father, saw him defending a black man accused unjustly of raping a white woman.
Although the innocence of this man turned out to be obvious, the man was declared guilty….
His valiant and compassionate defense of innocence won him enmity, he even tried to hurt my brother and me…….
The mysterious man (“Boo”) took us to our house and left us safe….
The Sheriff of village discovered that somebody was dead during the attack…., Atticus considered that “Boo” would be declared innocent….
But I told him that to exhibit him to public scrutiny of a trial would cause him a great harm, this would be as to kill a mockingbird…..
Final comment
A masterpiece plain of shade with a clear message: do not fall into typical morality and sentimentalism.
I recommend it. Unforgettable.
Although..... It is in black and white, but perhaps this is part of its charm.
