Transforming the parent function (graphing)

y = sin(x) is the parent function for sine. There are several things we can do to alter its graph -- we are going investigate how each changes the graph.

General formula for a sine curve is: y = a sin(bx + c) + d

In your group you are going to each investigate one trait, and share what you learn with your group:

  • Trait 1: y = a sin(x) how does a transform the graph?
  • Trait 2: y = sin(bx) how does b transform the graph?
  • Trait 3: y = sin(x + c) how does c transform the graph?
  • Trait 4: y = sin(x) + d how does d transform the graph?
