  • E.V.LUCAS HAS HEARD A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THE SCHOOL WHICH HAS DEVELOPED ITS UNIQUE PRACTICES FOR MAKING CHILDREN MORE THOUGHTFUL AND KIND.

CONTEXT OF THE LESSON

  • The author had great curiosity to visit the Miss Beam’s special school. He got the chance last week.
  • When he reached the school he found that the young girl of almost 12 years old ,was carefully led by the young boy through the flower bed. The author found this scene rather disheartening to him.
  • He went straightforward to meet Miss Beam, the Headmistress of the school.
  • Miss Beam was – Middle aged woman, full of authority yet kind and understanding. She had plump figure.

Interactions Between Miss Beam & The Narrator

    • Miss Beam told the narrator that her school follow the routine curriculum : spellings , adding ,subtracting ,multiplying & writing. She mentioned that her methodology is simple but the school has unique approach for its aim.
    • She narrated the aim of her School:

The real aim of this school is not to teach thought as to teach thoughtfulness-kindness to others, and being responsible citizens.”

    • Miss Beam asked the author to peep through the window & to have the look at the playground.

Miss Beam Explanation about the Unique Practices

    • Miss Beam laughed to the author’s description seeing physically disabled children and she mentioned that they were playing the roles assigned to them.
    • Miss Beam :

“To make our children appreciate and understand misfortune we make them share in misfortune too. Each term every child has one blind day ,one lame day ,one deaf day, one injured day and one dumb day. ”

    • Miss Beam explained that every child learn and realize the misfortune of being disabled and even other duty children understood the importance of helping others.
    • Even the thoughtless child realizes what misfortune is.”

Blind Day & Dumb Day

  • Miss Beam mentioned that the Blind Day is the worst. During the blind day the eyes of students were bandaged absolutely and they are on their honour not to peep. They depend on others for every single task and understood the importance of help.
  • Miss Beam also explained that Dumb Day is also equally difficult because the child has to show his strong will- power for not uttering a single word .
  • Children learn the misfortune and appreciate the help of others. On their duty day they become more helpful and caring for others.
