To be classified as a Sophomore you must have completed 6 credits at the start of the year.

Sophomores are required to take PE Health/Drivers Ed as a graduation requirement.

With 4x4 block scheduling often times students will get off the “typical” course progression. Specifically, BTEC and Gov School students could have to put a course off for the following year, but these are done on a case by case basis. This can also happen if you fail a course, transfer in from a different school, re-take a foreign language, etc.

Virtual Virginia is an online platform students can use to take courses that:

  • Are not offered in the building
  • Will not fit into the student’s schedule
  • Students are enrolled in Virtual Virginia courses on a space available basis.
  • Parents/guardians and students should be aware of the rigorous nature of these courses and that inadequate preparation for a Virtual Virginia course could adversely affect their high school transcript.
  • Option for taking a course over the summer at the student’s expense.

18 of 24

The academy offers online access to K-12 curriculum and courses that are comparable to courses in the BCPS Program of Studies. Virtual academy students may combine academy courses with in-person courses at the Governor's Schools, community colleges, BTEC, or AP art, band or chorus at the student's home school.

  • Virtual academy courses are asynchronous and students must have reliable internet access.
  • Students wishing to participate in online learning are required to register for the virtual academy during the registration period at the home school.
  • Additional meetings and registration paperwork will be required from all students enrolled in the virtual academy.
