THE SENSE OF TOUCH

We use our sense of touch

to identify the shape

and texture of objects and

to feel heat, pain and pressure.

The SKIN is our organ of TOUCH.

HOW OUR SENSE OF SKIN WORKS

1- Our SKIN has millions of touch receptors that allow us to feel different sensations.

2- The RECEPTORS send the information to our brain through the nerves.

THE SENSE OF SMELL

We use our sense of smell

to identify odours. People

can recognise thousands of

different odours.

The NOSE is our sense organ

of SMELL.

HOW OUR SENSE OF SMELL WORKS

1- Odours in the air enter the nostrils and reach the nasal cavity.

2- At the top of the nasal cavity

is the olfactory epithelium.

It contains the receptors that

detect the odours. These receptors

send the information along the

olfactory nerve to the brain.

THE SENSE OF TASTE

We use our sense of taste

to detect different flavours.

The TONGUE is our sense organ

of TASTE.

The TONGUE is covered

with small bumps called

TASTE BUDS.

These receptors detect

flavours and send

information to the

brain along the nerves.

Our taste buds can detect five basic flavours:

-SWEET: sugar, fruit..

-SALTY: salt, seafood..

-SOUR: lemon, vinegar..

-BITTER: coffee, grapefruit..

-UMAMI: Ham, cheese
