Role of the School Resource Officers (SROs)

Teacher, Mentor, Law Enforcement

  • Ensure safety and security on campus.
  • Build positive relationships with students and staff
  • Provide mentorship and educational outreach
  • Collaborate with the school administration
  • Connect students with community resources
  • Bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and Students

APS Campus Safety Officers

  • Provide a safe and secure environment for students, staff, visitors and property across all APS campuses.

  • Prevent fire, vandalism, theft, disorderly conduct and other safety-threatening incidents through proactive planning and enforcement.

  • Develop, implement and monitor emergency response plans (lockdown, evacuation, hazmat, severe weather) and conduct drills in partnership with schools and first-responders.

  • Patrol district buildings and grounds during the school day and after hours; monitor alarms and provide around-the-clock dispatch services.

  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies (e.g., Aurora Police Department) and school-based SROs to address criminal activity, threats, and maintain safe campuses.

  • Manage visitor screening, volunteer background checks, and installation of security infrastructure (cameras, radios, communication tools).

  • Provide training and resources district-wide: staff training on safety procedures, distributing information, facilitating drills and internal reviews.

Off-Campus Boundaries & Safety Expectations

  • Juniors and Seniors are only allowed to leave campus with a Principal’s Pass — no exceptions.

  • Students and their vehicles are not allowed at Burns Memorial United Methodist Church, next to the school (1095 Newark St.)

  • The pastor has requested that no students be present due to car burnouts, trash, and vandalisms.

  • Students caught on church property may receive a summons or be arrested for trespassing.

  • Student are not Permitted at Nome Park (1200 Nome St.) during school hours

Remember: Your student is safest when they are inside the campus and supervised by school staff

  • Regular drills: Lockdown (Threat Inside), Secure Perimeter (Threat Outside)
  • Evacuation ( Could Be Anything Inside)
  • Hold (School holds its current status)
  • Controlled building access and surveillance
  • Visitor check-in and ID policies
  • Staff training and coordination with APD
  • Hall monitors at campus entrances and hallways

Traffic & Pick‑up/Drop‑off Safety

  • Follow posted signs and staff directions
  • Student entrance is on the east side of the school (Athletic Entrance)
  • Avoid double‑parking or blocking crosswalks
  • Slow speeds & extra care for pedestrians
  • Keep fire lanes clear at all times
  • RideShare pickup’s on 10th Ave (Only)

Smoke Free School

  • Use or possession of tobacco, nicotine, or THC products (including vapes) is not permitted on or around school property or during school events.

  • Vapes, e-cigarettes, and similar devices are prohibited — even if they contain nicotine-free liquid.

  • If a student is caught using or possessing these items, school and legal consequences may follow in line with APS policy and state law.

  • Confiscated vapes will not be returned under any circumstances.

  • Our goal is to maintain a safe, healthy environment for all students and staff.

Know Your Child

  • Notice changes in your child’s mood, behavior, or friends — these can be early warning signs.

  • Know who your child spends time with, both in person and online.

  • Establish clear rules and expectations for behavior at home, school, and online.

  • Encourage your child to come to you if they ever feel unsafe, pressured, or confused.

  • Be involved in your child’s school life — attend events, talk to teachers, and review progress regularly.

  • Know where your child is after school and who they are with.

  • Teach your child about appropriate boundaries and respectful relationships.

  • Monitor social media and gaming platforms.

  • Teach digital footprints & privacy (Know what they are putting online)
  • Recognize signs of cyberbullying or grooming (Pay attention to your child’s demeanor)

Artificial Intelligence/Deep Fakes

  • Deep fakes are AI-generated videos, images, or audio that make it appear someone said or did something they never actually did.

  • They use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to manipulate or replace faces, voices, and movements with realistic precision.

  • Common examples: fake celebrity videos, altered political speeches, or fake student videos shared online.
  • Misinformation & Hoaxes: They can spread false information quickly, damaging reputations or creating panic.

  • Bullying & Harassment: Deep fakes can be used to embarrass or threaten students by putting their faces in false or inappropriate videos.

  • Extortion & Scams: Criminals use fake videos or voice recordings to trick victims into sending money or personal information.

  • Erosion of Trust: They make it harder to know what’s real online, creating confusion in schools and communities.

  • Legal Consequences: Creating or sharing harmful deep fakes may violate laws related to harassment, defamation, or privacy.
