Why do we use quotes in our papers?

Because quotes are evidence!


  • Add strength to our interpretation of the literature
  • Connect the essay to the text
  • Help illustrate important points made within the essay

Quotes should be brief with only the essential words and phrases that support your main point

Long quotes break up the paper, making it lose focus.

Holden describes his sister saying, “I mean, if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you’re talking about. If you take her to a lousy movie, she knows it’s a lousy movie. If you take her to a pretty good movie, she knows it’s a pretty good movie” (Salinger 67).
