All About the Brown School 2023 STEAM Fair

Who Can Participate?

All K-3 students!

Are you curious about the world around you and how things work?

Do you like to create experiments to test your ideas? Do you have an idea for an invention or a way to improve something that already exists?  If yes, the STEAM Fair is for YOU!

How do I Participate?

Create either a Scientific Investigation or an Engineering Design project to share at the STEAM Fair. Projects and experiments are completed at home. You create a trifold display board to bring to the STEAM Fair to share what you learned. You may work in teams or individually.

When is the STEAM Fair?

THURSDAY APRIL 13

How Do I Sign Up?

There is a link to the sign up on the flyer going home and online on Monday, March 13

Must sign-up with your project idea by: Friday, March 24

How do you make a cloud?

She researched clouds (how they are made and the different types). Then, she created an experiment to recreate a cloud in bottle.

How do plants “drink” water?

She learned about how plants bring in water through their roots and designed an experiment to show how this happens.

Can fruit conduct electricity?

He learned about electrical circuits and what types of objects can conduct electricity. He then tested different fruits to see if he could make a working circuit.

  • Invention - Do you have an idea for an invention or a way to improve something that already exists?
  • Solve a real-world problem - think of a problem that needs a solution and design a prototype that helps solve it. Think: pollution and alternative energy sources (or a problem at home or school that needs a solution)
  • Robotics - design a robot that helps humans do something.

How can we use solar power and how does it work?

These students researched solar power as an alternative energy source and created models to show how we can use it to power motors.

How can we prevent mudslides?

He researched the causes of mudslides and built a model to show what happens to the land.

Solve an environmental problem...

The Art Bot

He built a robot that creates mini canvas paintings.

Mechanical Hand

How do I get started?

  • Think about what you are interested in. What inspires you? What excites you? What are you curious about? Make a list and think about how you can turn these ideas into a project, investigation, or experiment.

  • Look in books and websites to get ideas.

  • Make some sketches!

  • Decide on a project idea and sign up online by April….?!

Reminders & Tips ...

  1. You may work alone or with a partner. If you want to work with a partner, you must get permission from a parent.
  2. Safety is important! Projects must avoid contact with dangerous chemicals, sharp objects, highly flammable materials, open flames, and/or live animals.
  3. Keep all of your notes, sketches, research and ideas in a notebook or folder.
  4. Don’t throw away plans for ideas that didn’t work. Use these to show the design process.
  5. Remember to take pictures and/or video to use in your display at the STEAM Fair.
  6. Ideas and resources for your project can be found online at:
