How to gather usable knowledge of people’s everyday experiences?

Early stage participation in planning is key

for people to have the experience of being heard,

and also for participation to really have an impact on planning outcomes.

The earliest possible stage for participation is gathering data and knowledge

from residents before anything has been planned.

You also have to make sure that planners can efficiently use the knowledge

so that it can actually influence planning outcomes.

We want to assure residents that all knowledge is processed in the same way, regardless whether it’s expert knowledge – so called “hard” data, or people’s experiences.

We want to store, analyze and distribute knowledge for use in various processes.

With traditional methods this is a near-impossible feat.

– Also, in planning, place-based knowledge is particularly valuable – such that these post-it notes are certainly not.

PPGIS* in Trimble Locus Cloud – workshop�*participatory planning GIS / people’s place-based knowledge

The researchers have held two workshops where planners were asked,

to suggest pertinent ways to analyze the data, and
to express their views on how the dataset and the analyses should best be distributed in the city’s GIS Trimble Locus Cloud.

The Trimble GIS is the general registry of the city,

which has more than 600 datasets

from land ownership to infrastructure and natural and cultural environment.

We believe integrating the My Espoo dataset into the same GIS system

as all other background data for planning,

it will be used in a similar way to the “hard” data.

In Locus Cloud, you can overlay the data with other datasets and view them simultaneously.

Planners said they use the Cloud webGIS tool on a daily basis to access background knowledge for planning.

Aalto researchers are documenting this whole process,

not just analyzing the data,

to gain understanding as to what is needed to enable PPGIS to actually influence planning outcomes.
