Learning Goals:
* It is important to not lose the human element in the applications of AI technologies.
* The purpose of this learning is to educate and share information so that moral and ethical decisions are made with factual knowledge.
The Rock vs. Scissors
Engage
With a variety of AI tools popping up, it is hard to know which tool can accomplish which task. Or which tool is fun and creative, buy it might not have an application in your professional practice.
Watch the video on the next slide and then reflect on the questions provided on the slide after the video.

4 Foundations of Responsible Use
Empathy
Understand not only what’s relevant to the audience, but what is suitable for that audience in that context. Define those rules and provide guardrails for the AI as it learns.
Fairness
Regulate AI training data and evaluate the impact of their data training strategies as they’re being used in the real world to catch bias that might have been unintentionally introduced earlier in the process.
Transparency
Companies have to be proactive about certifying their algorithms, clearly communicating their policies on bias, and providing a clear explanation of why decisions were made when there’s a problem.
Accountability
Companies must proactively establish and hold themselves accountable for higher standards, and balance the great power AI gives them with the larger responsibility of sustaining relationships with the customers they serve.
How does this topic impact teaching and learning?
AI in Education:
What are responsible uses of Artificial Intelligence?
Empathy: AI-driven systems equipped with emotion recognition can gauge students' emotions, allowing teachers to provide timely support or guidance when students exhibit signs of frustration, confusion, or disengagement.
Fairness: AI can help identify disparities in educational resources or opportunities. By analyzing data, it can highlight areas where intervention is needed to provide equal access to quality education.
Transparency: AI models in education should be transparent and interpretable. Implementing Explainable AI techniques allows students, teachers, and administrators to understand how AI systems make decisions or recommendations, fostering trust and comprehension.
Accountability: Establishing clear ethical guidelines and standards for AI use in education ensures accountability. Schools and institutions should adopt policies that define responsible AI use and outline consequences for misuse or unethical practices.
Quick Quiet Reflection (QQR):
(Post-exploration) How can you engage students in conversation around responsible use of AI around the Big Ideas and activities?
