AI Best Practices

  • Use the 80/20 rule: Brisk will get you 80% of the way there. We encourage you to review for accuracy and to add your personalization to make the material relevant to your students. “Own the thinking, outsource the doing.”

  • Check for bias and accuracy: AI may occasionally produce incorrect content. Always double-check before sharing with students.

  • Be as specific as possible when typing into Brisk’s textbox.

A few things to consider when using Brisk tools…

HOW TO SAVE 10+ HRS/WEEK

2024 Brisk Teaching |

29 of 38

The ONE Google Doc Rule

For both “Inspect Writing” and “Give Feedback”

  • ONE doc for each writing assignment
    • Doc tabs are also an option
  • This helps you use AI tools as well as noticing when students are using them.
  • Discuss this with students in both your syllabus and (repeatedly) throughout the term.
  • Make a plan for how you will do this (Canvas Google Integration, Google Classroom, etc.)

WHAT BRISK CAN DO FOR YOU

Transparency when Giving Feedback with AI

Pair Share:

How would you feel if you were a parent of a Helix student and the teacher gave your child feedback with AI?

Why do you think it would be important for a teacher to be transparent with students when using AI to give them feedback?

WHAT BRISK CAN DO FOR YOU

Transparency: Classroom Example

  1. What it is:
    1. Ex: I show students their “Glow and Grow” feedback the day after a draft. I explain how I set it up and show them a live example.

  • Your “Why:
    • Ex: I make it clear that I am grading their papers, and this is a faster tool I use so they can make changes in the meantime.

  • How you want them to use Brisk feedback:
    • Ex: Students highlight parts of the feedback that they think will help, engage in reflective partner discussions, and use it to make changes.
    • Ex: I use the Targeted Feedback in real time for writer’s conferences, and we choose the accurate feedback together.

WHAT BRISK CAN DO FOR YOU

Takeaways - Your checklist

  • Do I want to use Brisk?

  • How do I want to use Brisk?

  • ONE Doc: How will I teach my students to use ONE Google Doc only? What method will I use to push out Google Docs/Slides, etc.?

  • Transparency: If I choose to use Brisk/AI to give feedback, How will I communicate this to students? Here’s an article to start the conversation
