Holiday Party Beer Exchange

Bring a six-pack or equivalent volume and drop it off at the beer exchange table. Each will be assigned a number for a drawing later in the evening. When it is your turn, you draw a number from the hat and go select the corresponding unit of beer. Anyone can participate, and you are only limited by your own creativity in assembling your six-pack. You can bring commercial beer or homebrew to exchange. Please, don't give any beer you wouldn't want to receive!

Bring 72 ounces of beer, give or take, for the exchange in any equivalent:

• 6 x 12 oz. = 72 ounces

• 3 x 22 oz. bombers = 66 ounces

• 3 x 750 ml champagne bottles = 76.0816 ounces

How to Brew an Imperial Stout

Ready to craft a rich, bold beer?

Let’s get started with brewing an Imperial Stout!

23 of 48

What is an Imperial Stout?

  • Imperial stouts are strong, dark beers with higher alcohol (8-12% ABV).
  • Flavors: Expect roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits.
  • These beers are meant for sipping and savoring slowly.

24 of 48

Key Ingredients

  • Malts: Use roasted barley, chocolate malt, caramel malt for richness.
  • Hops: Opt for Magnum or Centennial for bitterness.
  • Yeast: Strong ale yeast that can handle high alcohol.
  • Extras: Consider adding coffee or vanilla for depth.

25 of 48

Mashing

Mashing

  • Use 15-20 pounds of malt and mash at 150-154°F.(5 gal Batch )
  • This temperature ensures a good balance of sugars and body.
  • Watch for: Steady mash temperature for optimal sugar extraction.

26 of 48

Boil

Boil the wort for 60-90 minutes to concentrate flavors.

Add hops early for bitterness and later for aroma.

Watch out: Keep an eye on the pot to avoid boil-overs!

27 of 48

Step 3: Fermentation

  • Transfer the wort to the fermenter and pitch your yeast.
  • Ferment for 2-3 weeks at 65-70°F.
  • Tip: Use a blow-off tube to manage vigorous fermentation.

28 of 48

Secondary Fermentation

  • Transfer to a secondary fermenter for more aging.
  • Add extras like coffee or bourbon-soaked oak chips at this stage.
  • Patience: Let the beer age for several months,
  • last one I did was over a year for complex flavors.

29 of 48

Step 5: Bottling & Carbonation

  • Bottle the beer with priming sugar for carbonation.
  • I generally keg beers but these are nice to bottle in order to share.
  • Aging: Let the beer mature for months—flavors will only improve.
  • Watch out: Over-carbonation can happen with strong beers, so use less sugar.

Imperial Stout Brewing Summary

  • Mash temp: 150-154°F
  • Boil time: 60-90 minutes
  • Fermentation: 2-3 weeks at 65-70°F
  • Bottling: Condition for a few months up to a year for best flavor
  • Enjoy the deep, bold flavors of your homemade Imperial Stout!
