What is it?

  • According to the dictionary: the practice of sending fraudulent communications that appear to come from a legitimate and reputable source, usually through email and text messaging.

The attacker's goal is to steal money, gain access to sensitive data and login information, or to install malware on the victim's device.

Ways they try to get you!Text Messages

I ordered an item off the internet. I was waiting for my email stating my order was shipped. Instead, I got a text stating they were from the USPS. This is SPAM.

  • USPS doesn’t have my phone number.
  • Always first: Check the site you ordered it from - order status
  • Never click on the link
  • Make sure you know the phone number.

Cloning messages

Hackers pretending to be from American Express, sent a text message to their victims telling them they needed to tend to their accounts.

The message said it was urgent, and if the victim clicked on the link they provided, they would be taken to a fake site and now they gain your personal info.

Always: go to the company site directly. Never click on the link in a text or email.

Emails are great lures scams too!

  • Who is Staff Appreciation?
  • Always look at the person who is sending you the email. Do you know them? If you do, is the email address you know belongs to them. Many times, they will use a name you know but the email address is not them.
