Presidential [Preference] Primary

Purpose: The primary purpose of a presidential primary is to allow party members to vote for their preferred candidate to represent their party in the presidential election. The outcome of these primaries influences the allocation of delegates who will vote for the candidates at the party's national convention.

Missouri’s Presidential Primary

Missouri held caucuses for Presidential primary in 1992 and 1996 but has held state ran open Presidential primaries since the 2000 election.

GOP supermajority passed an election law in June 2022 that eliminated the state ran Presidential primaries becoming one of the first states in the country to revert to caucuses.

The Missouri Democratic Party (MDP) Plan

We will hold caucuses to select state and national delegates (not new).

We will hold a party-run election (new).

MDP-Run Primary Basics

Mail-in Voting

Any registered voter (potential question/affidavit verifying party affiliation)
Registered Democrats will receive postcard with basic instructions
Ballot can be requested online with distribution beginning on Feb 12
Ballot request closes on March 12
Mail-in must be received by MDP before 10:00 AM on March 23 (election day)

Party-Run In-person Voting

Each county will have a polling place (St. Louis & KC areas will have more)
Polls open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Other important details for now

We are working to identify a secure election vendor who will help fill in many details and make the process go smoothly.
To participate in mass meetings and conventions or to run as a delegate all individuals must have voted in the primary election on March 23.
Candidates for delegates must be registered Democrats (as of now)
