Being a newcomer can be intimidating, but the great thing is every SCAdian was once a newcomer themselves, and most remember those feelings. In fact a great convo starter for any SCAdian is “What was your first event?”.
This society works because people come and participate. They volunteer time and effort into creating a wonderful environment that leaves people with great memories.
That’s why participation is the most important aspect of the SCA. Be the kind of person you want to hang out with, lend a hand, attend court, ask questions. Tell people you are NEW and get great welcoming reactions!

What is that you are doing?
SCAdians Love geeking out in conversations about their passions. If you find something interesting totally ask about it! This is often the first avenue to building friendships and meeting your tribe. This is a historic recreation group and many people put tons of hours into research, trust me they would love to share this info! Depending on the situation or event you may even get invited to try it out yourself!

Some people make their own, some trade their craft/skill/time, some just buy items, but again this is how you discover who’s into what and can start to make connections with people who have similar interests.
Camping
At your first camping event you will probably have a mundane tent. When you pre-register you will be placed in the open camping areas if you haven’t already connected with a group or household. THATS GREAT! Some SCAdians camp in mundane tents at every event for years. Don’t worry about having a period encampment right away!
Garb
All that the SCA asks is for an attempt at pre 1600’s clothing. As long as an effort is seen, that’s wonderful. Some folks dive right into a persona and purchase or sew a full outfit (or 3) right away via Etsy or other vendors. Some people test the waters in what gold key has to offer. Some are decked out by friends and some use these tips to get started...
