Why water and sanitation is a gender equality issue?

Gender equality in maritime sphere: main problems and success stories

Hazardous substances and waste management through the lens of gender equality

Biodiversity and gender equality is not an obvious but important connection

Agenda

Why water is a gender equality issue?

  • Women and girls are the primary users, providers and managers of water in their households
  • Lack of adequate sanitation facilities may influence on illness, safety risks and violence at school

SDG 6

Women have unequal opportunities in blue industries because of

  • lack of access to loans, training, and labour unions;
  • gender stereotyping, which restricts women to lower-paying or unpaid tasks;
  • exclusion from decision-making and governance processes across management levels.

Biodiversity

  • Women are often limited in ownership of and access to land and other productive resources;
  • Women are often restricted in getting latest information on natural and water resources and participating in decision-making processes;
  • Differences in how different genders get knowledge about plant and animal species, their uses and management.

16 of 17

  1. Access to drinking water and sanitation is a gendered issue, as restrictions on access to resources reinforce already existing inequalities in society.
  2. The maritime sphere is a men-dominated sphere. Women are not represented in decision-making due to existing stereotypes, limited access to information and education in this area
  3. At every stage from plastic production to disposal, there are gender differences in access to information, safety and decision-making.
  4. At the moment, there is still not enough research on the connection between gender equality and water-related issues
