WHAT YOU WILL MAKE

Five creative projects to build!!!!

9 of 66

You will be

making

FutureGear: wearable,

interactive,

electronic accessories.

10 of 66

You will use your FutureGear to “experience” the environments of an imaginary planet.

11 of 66

PROJECT 1:

Journal, Planet Map, & Sensor Badge

ALERT: Your FutureGear will not work without making a sensor badge.

12 of 66

Project 2:

FutureGear: FORE SIGHT

Fore Sight combines a forearm wearable with a light sensitive circuit.

When Fore Sight is connected to your sensor badge, your arm will be able to see changes in light and dark

13 of 66

Project 3:

FutureGear:

SONIC VISOR

Sonic Visor combines a head wearable with a sound circuit.

When Sonic Visor is connected to your sensor badge, your head will have tap-sonar capabilities.

14 of 66

Project 4:

FutureGear

DESIGN CHALLENGE!

You will design and build your own

FutureGear - using a Touch Circuit.

What new sense will your Future Gear produce when it is connected to your sensor badge?

15 of 66

Project 5:

FUTURE GEAR

DANCE GIF

CELEBRATION

You will make a gif of yourself wearing your FutureGear and Celebrate!

Phew!

You made it through the dry stuff. Now let’s open up your INVENTORY KIT!

38 of 66

Get your inventory kit. Let’s see what tools and materials you will use to build your FutureGear.

39 of 66

INVENTORY KIT

  1. PAPER BOX

2. CIRCUIT BOX

3. CRAFT BOX

You should have a big brown box and two smaller white boxes.

Use these boxes to store your stuff and stay organized!

40 of 66

INVENTORY KIT

  • PAPER BOX (the big brown box)

Is where you can store your sheet materials and the journal you will make.

ATTENTION: There is cardboard at the bottom of your box. It is hard to see. Don’t miss it!

41 of 66

INVENTORY KIT

2. CIRCUIT BOX

Your circuit box contains all the tools and electronic bits and pieces you will need to

create circuits.

42 of 66

INVENTORY KIT

THIS IS WHAT THE THINGS IN YOUR CIRCUIT BOX WILL BECOME EVENTUALLY.

BE EXTRA NEAT, AND

TRY NOT TO LOSE

ANYTHING!

43 of 66

INVENTORY KIT

3. CRAFT BOX

Your craft box contains craft materials you can use to construct the wearable parts of your future gear. If you have other crafting materials, fee free to use them.

44 of 66

RECYCLABLES

If you really want your projects to stand out we recommend gathering materials from your trash and recycling.

Especially light-weight materials

Here are some things that could really spice up your Gear.

45 of 66

Now that you know what’s in the Inventory kit, it is time to set up your LAB!

(my lab is cold, so I put on a hat)

46 of 66

Where you work and how you organize

and store you materials can have a big

impact on what you are able to make.

  • Try to find a table or flat space that you can keep clear.

  • You will need an electrical outlet for a computer and glue gun and possibly an extension cord

  • You need enough light to see what you’re doing, if the room is dimly lit, see if you can use a lamp.

SET UP YOUR LAB

47 of 66

  • Always put down a layer of newspaper or cardboard to protect surfaces

  • Set up a work station for the glue gun and put down a piece of cardboard for it to sit on (click here for how to make a glue gun station)

  • If you can’t leave your LAB set up, be sure to clean up carefully, and store your materials in an organized way.

SET UP YOUR LAB Continued

(maybe setup your lab like this?)

48 of 66

ORGANIZATION BASICS

There are a lot of small supplies in your supply kit. To keep them organized follow these tips

  • Keep electronics and craft supplies in separate boxes.

  • Be orderly - keep small parts in their ziplock bags.

  • If possible, find a shelf or small space where you can store your inventory kit and in-progress projects.

49 of 66

WIRE ORGANIZATION

We use specific colors of wire to keep organized, make sure you don’t run out of one color and make it easy to troubleshoot, but all colors of wire do the exact same thing: conduct electricity.

GET YOUR CIRCUIT BOX, AND TAKE OUT THE WIRE

Your wire will come in four colors- black, red, white & blue.

  • Carefully unwind the whole bundle

  • Wrap each wire gently around your hand one at a time

  • Put separate wire bundles back in your circuit box when you finish.

50 of 66

ORGANIZATION PRO TIPS

  • USE OLD CANS, JARS, OR YOGURT CUPS

TO HOLD TOOLS and PENS.

  • USE AN OLD EGG CARTON TO KEEP TRACK OF SMALL PIECES WHEN YOU GATHER SUPPLIES, AND WHILE YOU WORK.

(IF YOU CUT OFF THE LID, IT WILL ACTUALLY FIT INSIDE YOUR CIRCUIT BOX)

51 of 66

Go ahead and

set up your lab!

Be sure to choose a place where you can focus!!!

52 of 66

And now

A word on tools

And tool safety!

53 of 66

Tools and Tool Safety

54 of 66

Tools

Hot glue gun

Scissors

Wire

Cutter/Stripper

Ruler

Tape Measure

These are the tools you’ll be using in this program. They all should be used properly and safely. The following slides will go over safety precautions.

(If you haven’t already, remove your ruler, scissors, hole punch, and wire cutters from their packages.)

Hole

puncher

55 of 66

Using Cutting Tools

Use the right tool! Scissors are for paper or cardboard only - not wire!

When you’re finished with a tool, put it back where it belongs.

DO'S

DONT'S

Never cut towards yourself, especially your hand or fingers!

Focus, don’t be distracted or distract others.

Tools aren’t toys- never play with them.

56 of 66

Using Hot Glue Guns

DO

DON’T

  • Set up a space just for hot glue
  • Cover your working surface with paper
  • Wait 30 seconds for glue to cool down
  • Unplug glue gun when done
  • Touch the tip of the glue gun
  • Touch the glue when it is hot

57 of 66

Using Hot Glue Guns VIDEO

Practice with your hot glue gun before gluing anything important!

58 of 66

Electronics/Circuits

  • Follow circuit instructions closely, if something is plugged in wrong, it won’t work
  • Keep your electronics, computer and tools away from liquids
  • Unplug things when you aren’t using them
  • If you smell burning, see smoke or feel something getting hot unplug it immediately and carefully check your wiring

59 of 66

It’s time for your first EARTH TRANSMISSION!
