With my darlings at a family bar-mitzva.

Nice activities to get to know my students better.

  • I ask each student to write 3 facts about themselves on a piece of paper. I put on music, the students then travel around the room. When the music stops-they pair up, share verbally their facts, and exchange notes. Music on, walking in the room again. When the music stops, they pair up again, this time they share the info they were given by their friend (not their own), and switch notes again. This can be repeated one more time.

Finally, we sit in a circle, each kid reads out the facts he was given, and everyone tries to guess who it is.

2. Throwing a ball, each kid tells his hobby/favorite subject/favorite movie-and throws it to someone else who must repeat it, and tell his own, then throw it again.

3. I really loved the idea about the yarn ball, written at the bottom of session two. I’m already looking for a yarn ball). I plan to give a compliment to a student, then throw him/her the ball, then they need to compliment a friend and throw the ball over.

Session Two

Two different activities to get to know your students better

  • Using the Linoit app, students can write their names, and add one interesting fact about themselves or something unusual that has ever happened to them.
  • Using kahoot, they can write half sentences telling things they like to do. They can write 4 different endings. Only one of them is true, so the class should guess the right one.

For example: I am Laura, on Fridays I like to

a , meet friends b .play basketball c .sleep d listen to music

2 activities to get to know the students better:

  • I would use the cubes for the students to get to know each other better. I would have the students sit in a group of 4. One cube would have questions about the person; for example, hobbies, family, number child in the family, nieces and nephews. The other cube would have points. The students would get points if they have something in common. I would then have the students in group present their findings with the points. I would be an observer here and watch the game and would also join them in their findings by sharing my own. I think this would allow me to watch the students interact with each other and through the answers and the interactions i could get to know them better.
  • I really like the yarn idea. I have used this before. I like to have funny questions that i ask the students and then throw it to someone who answers the questions. It allows for a relaxing atmosphere in the classroom. I would observe and interact with the students.

After the game i would have a reflection and see how they enjoyed.

Task 2:

  • Each student gets 8 sticky notes which they will label the numbers 1 - 8 in the top right corner. Then they will complete my 8 sentence starters on the notes. For example: the most helpful teachers are the ones who ______ or One of my areas of strength in English class is _________. Then divide the class into 8 groups and they meet at their assigned station. Then they must talk about their responses with the other students in their group. Then post their sticky notes on the wall for that assigned station. They then go through all 8 stations and put their notes on the walls. Then we look at the answers and have a whole class discussion.
  • Have students write a letter to you. You can give them a template with some sentence starters or a list of questions you want them to answer, or you can let them free-write. You get to see their writing style and get a quick snapshot of who they are. The letters are also really helpful to read occasionally throughout the year when you are struggling to connect with a student or need some insight into their personalities.

*I also really love the yarn idea. I really enjoy activities that get the class up and moving around and so I think that will be one that I will do sometime this year even though I know the students. I think it could be a nice way to come back from Hanukkah vacation and talk about what we did over the holiday and solidify are connection.

Zoharit Said- Beer Ami

The first activity- The teacher writes two facts about herself, one fact is true and the second is false. The students need to guess what is the true fact. Then, each student does the same about himself. The teacher instructs the students to write interesting facts that most of the classmates don’t know. He reads the facts out loud and the other students need to guess.

The second activity- the teacher gives each students two flags- one flag is white and the second one is black. The students keep the flags in their bags and use them through the whole year. Every few lessons the teachers starts the lesson by asking them to take out the flags . Then, the teachers asks 4-5 Yes/No questions, for example- "Do you like summer?" or "Do you cook at home?" . The students wave the right flag according to their opinion. This way the teacher gets to know his students better and practice with them the structure of Yes/No questions. The teacher can ask the students to give

The him a list of questions they wrote on their own and he will use them next time.

The third activity (and thanks to Laura Berdichevsky )- Using the Linoit app, students can write their names, and add one interesting fact about themselves or something unusual that has ever happened to them.

Session 2 activties to get to know my students better. Yael van der Meer, Eynot Yrden

  • The M&M game. Each student takes 2-4 M&M candies in different colors. Then I write on the board a question for each color e.g. red:What is your favorite place?, Green: An English skill you would like to improve etc. Students give their answers and then of course eat their candies…
  • I ask each pupil to choose at least 3 of the questions from the previous activity, answer them in writing, add a selfie and send it to me. This enables them to be more open and enables me to see their writing.

And an activity from Zoharit Said (Thank you…)

The teacher writes two facts about herself, one fact is true and the second is false. The students need to guess what is the true fact. Then, each student does the same about himself. The teacher instructs the students to write interesting facts that most of the classmates don’t know. He reads the facts out loud and the other students need to guess.
