OUR MISSION…

ALL roads lead to a JOB

3 of 26

CRITICAL DATA TO CONSIDER:

Currently there are THREE (3) jobs paying $50k or more available for every unemployed Ohian.

MORE jobs are being created daily!

30% of O-H students are “chronically absent” from school annually (this represents an increase)

Only 60% of O-H students passed the 3rd grade reading guarantee according to most reticent data.

PreK access/funding continues to be less than surrounding states.

SEL/Student “well being” continues to be a major issue!

CRITICAL DATA…

  • Are your students “hopeful”?

  • Are they engaged?

  • Is there a sense of belonging?

  • Are they successfully acquiring “21st century” skills?

  • 3rd grade reading guarantee

CRITICAL DATA…

  • Rigor OR Relevance… Which comes first?
  • Interest or Aptitude/Ability… local data suggests students often show interest in careers that don’t align with their aptitude or ability- Must be more INTENTIONAL!
  • Who is really “AT RISK”? (SES,Race,Gender??)
  • Are schools aligned to support the “future” needs our students and employers will need?

Importance of STEM…

7 of 26

STEM Continued..

  • STEM careers represent 90% of future careers

  • STEM careers will pay on average 68% more than “non-STEM” careers

  • Unfortunately…there are currently only 2.3% of Ohio students attend a STEM designated school (81 buildings across 605 Ohio districts)

  • 36,874 of a total 1.6 million Ohio students (36% PreK-5; 27% 6-8; 37% 9-12)

To “Crack the Code” we must start with access to high quality “Pre-K”...

  • Gaps begin prior to starting school

  • ALL kids can learn when provided necessary opportunities and support

  • To access higher level math/science instruction necessary later in school… we must provide greater access to Pre-K!

  • Equity??

13 of 26

OHIO PreK data…

  • 675,000 Ohio kids age 5 and under (50% live in poverty)

  • 278,000 are age 3-5
  • Ohio currently funds 18,000 ECE “spots” at $4,000.00 each

  • Should our motto be…We prepare some kids for the best jobs??

To “Crack the Code” we must consider compressing the curriculum to create availability for students to engage in “career” connected learning opportunities…

  • HS Schedules (focus on flexibility)

  • Business/Industry partnerships- they likely will not go “deeper” until we identify students who have both interest and aptitude/ability??

15 of 26

To “Crack the Code” we must work collaboratively with Business/Industry partners to better align preparation, curriculum and facilities to support.

  • 2013 -14 “disconnect”

  • 2014 -15 began establishing “partnerships”

  • 2020 - 21 162 active partnerships

  • 2020 - 21 BAC awarded a “ star” award

  • 2021 - 22 BAC awarded a “4 star with Excellence”

  • Our BAC is our strongest “driving force”

To “Crack the Code” we must work collaboratively with Business/Industry partners to better align preparation, curriculum and facilities to support.

It all starts with a very high level, complex agenda:

  1. Open by showcasing a Business/industry and educational “BEST PRACTICE”
  2. In small groups- report out on “celebrations” since the last meeting.
  3. In small groups- report out on “obstacles/concerns”
  4. In small groups-report out on potential “solutions” to address “obstacles/concerns”
  5. Identify “next steps” (Rinse and Repeat next time!)

  • 3 school “pilot” in 2021
  • Expanding to 13 schools statewide in 22-23

  • 1/33,000,000 have “same 5 in same order”
  • EACH is UNIQUE!!!
  • Where do we go from here?

22 of 26

To “Crack the Code” we must act/move proactively rather than reactively…

  • The “great one”...

  • WE.. OUR schools are the ONLY true sanctuaries!!!

23 of 26

What can be learned from others?

  • Those who collaborate best… WIN!
  • Utilize opportunities we have to propel us into the 22nd Century and beyond.
  • Realize OUR role in our region and State’s advancement.
  • Think BIG, start SMALL, ACT NOW!!!!
