Learning Strategies (LRC)

This course is designed to aid students in becoming independent learners. Individual student goals will be addressed and curriculum support will be offered. With these objectives in mind, a student may earn one half unit of credit toward high school graduation each term that he/she is in the course. This credit will be noted as pass or fail on the report card and transcript. Placement of this course is for students with a current IEP.

Cognitive Impairment (CI)

MoCI

Students in the Moderate CI class work on functional academics and life skills curriculum. Curriculum focuses on adult living, vocational skills, functional reading, and money skills. Students participate in modified general education courses a few times a day. Weekly speech and social skills groups are included in the program. Students regularly participate in weekly Community Based Instruction (CBI) Trips. Students also participate regularly in microbusiness activities including a coffee cart, recycling, laundry service, and more. Placement of this course is for students with an IEP.

MiCI

Students in the Mild CI class spend a majority of the school day in the general education setting. Classes are modified and accommodated to meet their individual needs. In the MiCI classroom, curriculum focuses on functional skills, vocational skills, IEP goals, and work from general education classes. Students participate in weekly speech and social skills groups, as well as attend Community Based Instruction (CBI) trips. Placement of this course is for students with an IEP.

Emotional Impairment (EI)

This high school program provides a specialized and empathetic educational setting designed for students with emotional impairments. Focusing on fostering emotional well-being, interpersonal skills, and academic growth, the curriculum integrates therapeutic approaches with standard subjects. Students will engage in tailored activities, group discussions, and individualized support to enhance their emotional resilience and academic success. The program aims to create a positive and inclusive community that empowers students to overcome challenges, build self-confidence, and develop essential life skills. Placement of this course is for students with an IEP.

Individualized Lit & Comp.

Individualized English is designed to meet the individual needs of students who are recommended for this class. Instruction includes explicit instruction for reading and written language skills. The course uses research based methodologies to improve reading and composition. Course objectives align with Birmingham Public Schools approved English curriculum materials and standards. Additional materials may be used to address individual needs. This course may be repeated for credit. Placement of this course is for students with an IEP.

Individualized Math is a course for students who need extra math support before they enter the Groves mathematics course sequence. This year the students will be using the curriculum called the Transition to Algebra. This curriculum uses “logic puzzles, problems, and exploration to uniquely build students’ mathematical way of thinking”. The goal of this course is to improve students’ basic pre-algebra skills such as integers, fractions, order of operations, 2-step and 3-step questions, and graphing, so they feel confident when they attend general education mathematical courses. Placement of this course is for students with an IEP.

Community Based Vocational Instruction (CBVI)

    • The fundamental goal of the CBVI for Birmingham Public Schools is to assist students in their preparation for vocational employment. This course helps individuals to master the skills required for the world of work through integrating school-based education and job-based training.
    • As our students plan for career development and work toward career goals, they need to address issues related to upgrading their skills, acquiring knowledge of job opportunities, gaining ability to network for information and assistance, and developing employability skills.
    • The CBVI program helps identify vocational preferences and aptitudes, uses community resources to observe and try out jobs, and helps students learn the skills they need to enter competitive or supported work when they leave school.

Adjusted Classes

Students participate in a variety of physical activities and sports including but not limited to basketball, floor hockey, bowling, net sports, and Zumba. Activities may be modified to meet the needs and allow access to all students in the class.

PE

Students engage in a life skills curriculum focusing on adult daily living skills including but not limited to home living tasks, cooking and kitchen safety, health, personal and community management, and vocational training and opportunities to promote independence.

Daily Living

Students are introduced to and have opportunities to participate in a variety of art activities including but not limited to drawing, painting, and ceramics.

Peer to Peer Support

Peer to Peer is a reimagined class that links students in our Individual Needs program to same aged peers for social opportunities

What is peer to peer?

Students engage in lessons about differing abilities on Mondays. They then attend an elective with peers Tuesdays through Fridays where they plan and implement social activities. These elective classes may include Adaptive PE, Daily Living Skills or Adaptive Art. It can be repeated for credit.

How is it run?

Peer to Peer is for anyone that is interested in a unique opportunity to promote social skills and friendships within the Special Needs community.
