relevant & interesting

Learning outcomes are measurable statements that describe what attendees will be able to do after participating. Each session is evaluated based on the learning outcomes being:

Clearly stated and achievable with instruction.

Clearly linked to the topic in the description.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

A TRAILER FOR

YOUR TALK

Think of it like a movie trailer, giving snippets of what the audience can expect if they decide to tune in. It gives the highlights of a story and builds the suspense, without giving away the ending, enticing the viewer to find out more.

WHAT’S AN ABSTRACT?

AN ELEVATOR

PITCH

Finally, an abstract should provoke a reaction. By which, we mean it should stand out from the crowd and love it or hate it, make people ask questions they hadn’t thought to ask. Resonate with them on an emotional, as well as logical level.

In many ways, it’s also like a sales pitch - you have 30 seconds or less to get across your key messages and give your audience an understanding of what they can expect in terms of outcomes. It should quickly answer ‘Why is this interesting and relevant to me?’

WHAT TO INCLUDE

Language that clearly shows your topic belongs in the track you’ve selected, including learning level and specialized area of focus where applicable.

THE BIGGER

PICTURE

A HEADLINE FACT / FIGURE

How does your topic tie to bigger industry conversations, debates or trends? Start outside and work your way in.

Something that quantifies the importance and relevance of your topic without giving too much away.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

OF YOUR TRACK

A nod to your own personal experiences that helps make the topic relatable, or alternatively an indication as to why your topic can support your chosen audience.

KEY

TAKEAWAYS

SIMPLE, COLOURFUL LANGUAGE

A hint at what question will be answered, or what listeners will learn from your talk (this can be elaborated upon in your learning outcomes).

Finally, keep things simple and conversational. Think about how you might explain your topic to a parent or a friend over lunch.

A GOOD EXAMPLE

The 4th industrial revolution has dawned upon us and will radically change the $12 trillion global manufacturing sector. Expect to see a fusion of technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Internet-of-things, Data Analytics, Robotics and 3D Printing) that blurs the lines between the physical, digital and biological domains.

Here at HP Manufacturing, our industrial 4.0 journey starts with imparting tools that can help our people better embrace and apply these 4.0 technologies to drive the digital transformation to build the factory of the future.

As the end of the mass production era would usher in the new age of mass customization. There is an imperative need to leverage I-4 technologies for manufacturing.

In my session, I will cover the three key steps to embark on that journey. First, a clear vision and mission, keeping up to date on megatrends, followed by technologies and workforce upskilling. Finally, a set of guidelines that can help build smart factories of the future and take advantage of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

3 ACTIONABLE STEPS TO ADOPT WHEN EMBARKING ON A SMART MANUFACTURING JOURNEY

WHAT TO CULL

150 words is not a lot. So really, one headline stat is enough. Save your CV for the bio. Don’t detail the entire journey A to B. Instead, stick to the highlights only.

EXPLAINERS & DESCRIPTORS

INDUSTRY BUZZWORDS

Once you’ve linked your abstract to ‘the bigger picture’, your topic should be simple enough to understand that concepts don’t need lengthy explanations.

Feel the words ‘New Normal’ are overused? Chances are, so does everyone else. To stand out from the crowd, avoid buzzwords wherever possible.

THE FULL

WORKS

Remember that you’re selling yourself as a thought leader - not your organization. Too many brand mentions and you’ll fall straight under corporate mouthpiece.

THE INTANGIBLE & UNACHIEVABLE

JARGON & ACRONYMS

Abstracts are also awarded points based on learning outcomes - ensure the content isn’t so specific that listeners can’t replicate or apply to their own careers.

Even within a crowd of industry peers, your abstract should be accessible to varying levels of knowledge and understanding. Jargon and acronyms can cause exclusion.

Best Practices for Submissions

  • Keep the proposal scoring rubric in mind
    • Especially ensure your learning outcomes have been thoroughly thought through
  • Match your description to your content – mismatch is a common complaint
  • SWE encourages participation by speakers from backgrounds that are underrepresented in engineering and technology
    • If submitting for a panel style session, consider the diversity of perspectives provided by the panelists
  • Intermediate or advanced content (compared to beginner content) can make you stand out
  • Ask for others to review your proposal to improve it prior to submitting
    • BD has a central coordinator for speaker proposals each year to help facilitate this
  • Proposals are more likely to be selected if they do not include organization names because it flags the session as a “sales pitch.”

Tips & Tricks: Internal Learnings

  • Proposals have been especially successful when they are cross-company collaborations
    • Past collaborations have included J&J, Abbott, Merck, Exxon Mobil, etc.

  • The more unique the topic, the better chance you have at success
    • For example, there are fewer people submitting Health & Wellness topics than Working Through a Pandemic topics, even though both are relevant and timely

  • Write out your required sections in a Word document so that you can copy-paste them into the actual submission form
    • It’s easier to make changes, less likely to lose content due to web page timeout, etc.

  • Unique/memorable titles and learning objectives can increase interest in a session and the likelihood of proposal selection

  • Consider what attendees may take away from your session, and use this to help you guide the proposal (and session content, if selected)
