Luke 5:20-21
20 And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Luke 5:29-32
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
Luke 5:33-39
33 And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment.
Luke 5:33-39
If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”
Jesus engages the Pharisees regarding fasting to reveal the absolute necessity of genuine faith alone if we are to experience the forgiveness of sins He offers.
The accusation: You and your followers are not living like you love God.
The reveal: Don’t ever confuse spiritual disciplines, religious practices and pious behaviors with genuine faith.
The Journey: Jesus and his teaching are the new wine coming into the world, but some cannot even try the new, let alone enjoy it.
The accusation: You and your followers are not living like you love God.
Luke 5:33-39

JESUS, cure the lurking Pharisee and scribe in us all. We might be surprised at how easily our hearts slide in this direction. But worship that pleases you has a very different character. May we reflect God-pleasing worship, emphasizing our joy not merely our duty; free us to serve the Son rather than to attempt our own righteousness by the law; and free us to do good and save life in the midst of EVERYDAY, as an act of worship. Christ Jesus thank you for coming to save sinners so that we might truly worship. You are the Lord of worship. Tell us what pleases you. God, help me to listen closely to your teachings, so theyreshape and renew me to know your truth in whatever you invite me into today. Amen.
