Style of volunteering | Use cases | Examples |
Occasional Help | Good to get a few hours pretty easily | Town Square Events, Spring Festival |
Routine | Can get more hours if you regularly go | Food bank, Library, Animal Shelter |
Camp | Great if you have already been going to the camp and now want tons of hours | CYC (Chinese Youth Camp), NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), Summer Camps, Religious |
Leadership Position | Hours are super flexible and most will be from the comfort of your home; it is a big commitment though | ACAST Board, Club Officer |
What/for who should you volunteer for?
More commitment/
hours
Easier to get started
Styles: occasional help and routine
Explanation
Where to go
-You’ll usually have to sign up for 1-5 hour shift
-This is what most people think of as “volunteering”
-These can be a great opportunity to hang out with friends
-I’ve compiled a spreadsheet here of places I’ve found
-Please add any that you have found!
Note: Hours in routine style volunteering are sometimes more flexible so arriving late or early may not be as big of a deal
Camp
Explanation
Notes
-About a week long + training
-Usually leadership themed
-Will have a selection process
-Your role will be some variation of “camp counselor”
-May have multiple levels of leadership (advancement path)
-You’ll probably only participate in a few of these
-They could be in some larger organization (scouts, church)
-Do something local!
-100-300 hours!
Leadership Position
Explanation
-Will also have a selection process
-You’ll decide when you do it (flexible hours)
-Hours may be earned mostly at home
-You’ll be able to meet new people and work with them
How can I be a good volunteer?
When should I start volunteering?
The earlier the better!
Note: most opportunities will be age locked though (Southlake city generally requires 12 years or older)
Times not to volunteer
Don’t prioritize volunteering over much!
-When you have to study or do homework
-When you don’t feel like it/want to
-When you’re friends aren’t available
-When you’re tired
It’s ok to cancel shifts (48 hours in advance though)
