Titus 2:9 – 3:3

9 Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,

10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,

13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

1 Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed,

2 to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.

3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.

Titus 2:15

With All Authority

ESV

(15) Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

 NASB

(15) These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

NIV

(15) These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

  • What are “these things”?
    • Summary command typical of the Pauline Epistles, looking forward and backward.

  • What is to be spoken? What are things to be exhorted and reproved?

    • Speak, Exhort, and Reprove 🡪 All Present-Active-Indicative 2nd Person Singular Verbs

  • What is the source of the authority for the servant of God?

Titus 3:8 (NASB95)

8This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men.

 NASB

2 Timothy 3:13–4:2 (NASB95)

13But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

14You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them,

15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

1I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:

2preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.

Titus 2:11

Bringing salvation to all men…

ESV

(11) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,

 NASB

(11) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

NIV

(11) For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.

Grace of God – a.k.a Gospel (eu – angelion)

  1. Justice – paying out deserved retribution/reward

  • Mercy – withholding of retribution

  • Grace – applying generous kindness in the place where retribution was deserved. “Unmerited favor for the wicked.”

All men (not just the Jews):

  • NOT universal salvation for all men (John 3:16; 1 Timothy 4:10)
  • Universal opportunity for salvation (1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9)
