Topic - Wa

  • Topic (what the sentence is mainly about) is marked with Particle

wa – は (hiragana ha but read wa).

  • The topic of the sentence is Hanasan, the rest of the sentence

provides information about the topic ie describes Hanasan.

What is ‘desu’?

  • です(desu) is a polite Japanese verb-like expression that is often translated as "is," "am," or "are." However, it doesn't always match the English verb "to be" exactly.
  • You can think of です (desu)as a polite sentence ending that makes statements sound respectful.

はなこさん　 は　がくせい　です。

Hanako san wa gakusei desu.

Hanako (topic) student is.

Comparision

  • English: “I read the book.”

The subject can’t be omitted and the verb comes before the object.

​

  • Japanese: (わたしは) ほんをよみます。 [(Watashi wa) hon o  yomimasu.]
  • The subject can be omitted and the verb is always at the end of a sentence.
  • The order of the objects is flexible.
