CACREP Standards for Practice

Students are covered by individual professional counseling liability insurance.

Supervision includes program-appropriate audio/video recordings and/or live supervision of students’ interactions with clients.

Formative and summative evaluations of the student’s counseling performance are conducted as part of the student’s practicum and internship.

Students have the opportunity to become familiar with a variety of professional activities and resources during their practicum and internship.

In addition to the development of individual counseling skills, during either the practicum or internship, students must lead or co-lead a counseling or psychoeducational group.

Specific Standards Relevant to Practicum

Students complete supervised counseling practicum experiences that total a minimum of 100 clock hours over a full academic term.

Practicum students complete at least 40 clock hours of direct service with actual clients.

Practicum students have weekly interaction with supervisors that averages one hour per week of individual and/or triadic supervision throughout the practicum.

Practicum students participate in an average of 1½ hours per week of group supervision on a regular schedule throughout the practicum with a counselor education faculty member.

Specific Standards Relevant to Internship

Students complete 600 clock hours of supervised counseling internship.

Internship students complete at least 240 clock hours of direct service.

Internship students have weekly interaction with supervisors that averages one hour per week of individual and/or triadic supervision throughout the internship.

Internship students participate in an average of 1½ hours per week of group supervision on a regular schedule throughout the internship with a counselor education faculty member.

Supervisor Qualifications

A minimum of a master’s degree, preferably in counseling, or a related profession

Relevant certifications and/or licenses

A minimum of two years of pertinent professional experience in the specialty area in which the student is enrolled

Knowledge of the program’s expectations, requirements, and evaluation procedures for students

Relevant training in counseling supervision.

Expectations for Supervisors

  • Weekly 1 hour supervision
  • Orienting student to placement
  • Providing a range of clinical activities (including group if possible)
  • Providing opportunities for taping or live supervision (if possible)
  • Completing paperwork: Agreement Form, Evaluation Forms
  • Practicum: Responding to biweekly brief surveys to assess student’s progress
  • Internship: Participating in 4 site visits with student and faculty member
