Map of changes to the Duwamish River drainage from before 1906 to 1916

Note the river originally had three mouths:

The main mouth of the main channel Duw (Duwamish, Black and Cedar River) in Elliott Bay.
A southern mouth where the southern distributary of the White River (Stuck River) exited into Puget Sound via the Puyallup River in Tacoma,
A northern mouth where water draining from springs at the base of the Montlake Divide at Lake Washington entered Portage Bay, flowed from the Lake to Ross Creek and from there to Salmon Bay an inlet of Puget Sound in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle.

In 1906, a dam blocked White River, redirecting its entire flow south via Stuck River into the Puyallup. In 1910, Cedar River was diverted into Lake Washington. In 1916 the completion of the Lake Washington Ship Canal lowered the level of Lake Washington c16 feet to equal that of Lake Union, thereby eliminating Black River and directing the entire flow of the Lake Washington watershed, including Cedar River into Salmon Bay and Puget Sound. This leaves the Green River as the only watercourse entering Elliott Bay.
