  • Hosted by KIT Royal Tropical Institute

  • Funded by the Dutch MoFA

  • Membership network

Our mission:

To strengthen linkages between research, policy and practice through sharing, generating, translating and promoting the use of knowledge for the development of better policies and practices in SRHR

Why CRIM-KT?

Overall aim of CRIM-KT

  • Experimenting with strategies for moving newly acquired knowledge towards policy influencing and improving practice and spread this experience across the Share-Net Country Hubs.

Expected outcomes

  • Different knowledge products with the ability to improve policy and practice on a selected theme

  • Learning, exchange and capacity strengthening in the field of knowledge management within and between country hubs

  • Scientific publication(s) about process, lessons learned and outcomes

Key Elements of CRIM-KT

  1. Topic selection (Knowledge Translation and Use)
  2. Faculty recruitment (knowledge experts, project manager, and collaborative chair)
  3. Enrollment of participating teams (country hubs)
  4. Learning sessions (LS1, LS2, LS3, LS4)
  5. Action periods (AP1, AP2, AP3, periods between Learning Sessions )
  6. A Model for Improvement (Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycles)
  7. Summative meeting (at the end of the CRIM-KT cycle)
  8. Monitoring and evaluation

Topic Selection CRIM-KT

The country hubs selected their topic in close collaboration with the knowledge experts by using the following selection criteria:

  1. Current policy and practice deviates from best available scientific knowledge;
  2. There is evidence describing the gap between research, policy and practice;
  3. Examples of better performance exist and believed to be transferrable to other settings;
  4. Preferably all country hubs work on a similar or closely related topic.

Informal learning in CRIM-KT

  • Learner driven and strong focus on self-directed learning by doing
  • Peer-to-peer learning
  • Participatory action learning
  • Collated valuable resources on the SNI digital platform
  • Social learning through an update and exchange meetings mid-way in each action period

“We learned how you can identify, in a collaborative way, the root cause of a certain problem and then build up ideas on that. CRIM-KT is not only just passive learning. It’s also going there, implementing, and following up. That was very good. And then we came back and shared what we have done, what worked, and what did not. This was also very good for my team”

Outcomes and impact

Overall results:

  • Developing and implementing this model has resulted in a lot of enthusiasm between the hubs and the sessions inspired and fostered collaboration and sense of togetherness.

  • CRIM-KT led to improvements in policy and practice in a relatively short time frame and different contexts.

  • In all countries, the approach considerably strengthened participants’ knowledge translation capacities.

Country Specific Examples:

  • In Indonesia, local government policy was changed that aims to prevent child marriage by avoiding misinterpretation of a local cultural practice.
  • In Jordan, the cabinet endorsed a national action plan to prevent child marriage and changes in practice took place.
  • In Bangladesh, practice changed by strengthening coordination for collaboration and exchange among stakeholders to prevent child marriage.

Expansion and future of CRIM-KT

  • New CRIM-KT cycle started in 2022 focusing on improving SRHR information and education policy and practice.

  • Hybrid version with two online and two face-to-face international learning sessions and four local learning sessions

  • Brainstorm on an adapted CRIM-KT model in 2023/2024. Topics may include unsafe abortion, gender-based violence, and adolescent sexual health depending on which topics have the potential to elicit change.

CRIM-KT in the field of NTDs

  • There is great potential to provide CRIM-KT as a tailor-made service to other interested organisations.
  • The cost of one complete CRIM-KT cycle is about €200,000- 250,000 – for 4 countries based on 4 f2f international learning sessions and 4 local learning sessions
  • Final costs depend on how many countries/regions participate, online vs f2f learning sessions and local implementation budgets
