About

Manifesto: Elevate Latinos

We, Latinos, are a force to be reckoned with.

The power of Latinos in the United States has been growing exponentially in the past decades: We have the economic prominence equivalent of a world superpower, and we establish half of the businesses in the country. We vastly outnumber other demographics when it comes to net addition to the workforce and we are the largest ethnic minority, period. Our influence has gone unrecognized for far too long – it’s time to get loud about our impact and reach. From CEOs to students, artists to farmers, we are the heartbeat of the nation. Our rich heritage and unified determination empower us to shape a better future for the United States.

Knowledge and data is the power that will unite and inspire us to assert ourselves and drive change that will translate into credibility. We are the future: one in four Gen Zers are Latino and so are over 20% of college students. We are by far the youngest ethnic group in the United States. Our influence will only increase in future generations.

Our influence is undeniable and we’re just getting started. Together, we will continue to shape our narrative and forge a path where the contributions of the Latino community are not merely recognized but celebrated and embraced to benefit not just us, but all of society.

Data Tells Your Story

When you are creating content for the Elevate Latinos campaign, consider these ideas as an inspirational starting point for your ideation.

Tell Personal Stories

Ask an Expert

The LDC data tells the story of our community. It’s relatable - and likely to make audiences think about their own lives and experiences. Kick off the campaign by sharing your own story and experience, inviting your audience to do the same.

Dig into History

Draw connection

The issues that the LDC data uplifts aren’t new to our community. You can dig into the origins of these issues and explain them with relatable, colloquial language and stories.

You can phone a friend and interview someone relevant to the story the data is telling. Is your aunt a successful entrepreneur? DId your little brother film a pilot? Feel free to bring in others to bring stories to life and show how these issues impact the lives of real people.

Expand on the social aspects of the data. How does it show up in your life, your community, and society at large? Help the audience see how the data is relevant and important to them and their lives, too.

Audience Inspiration

In our co-creation session with young Latinos, they elevated stories such as:

“I didn’t know this before, but 84% percent of Latinos in the United States only speak English, or speak it well. I’m one of them, and even though I don’t speak Spanish well, I have a lot of pride for my Puerto Rican heritage. I’ve been told before that I’m not a real Latina or Hispanic because I don’t speak it, but I am very proud to be born to Puerto Rican parents who moved here when they were kids. I take part in the cultures and traditions they share with me. I am Latina!”

Selina G.

Influencer

“You know very well 99% of my screentime is used on TikTok. TikTok is used by 30% of Latinos in the USA - so why can't we be the top influencers on the app? We are the future. These companies need to be giving us a million dollar commercial deal!”

Juan S.

Workshop Participant

“The U.S. Latino economy would rank as the world’s 5th largest country - and I am a proud contributor to it. - coming from a family that runs a small business that is latino owned, I feel that I am making a positive impact on my local community working with latinos and helping them get into different career fields with workforce development and training - Latino Americans work in all different types of industries throughout the United States and should be represented accordingly and not with stereotypes!”

Audience Inspiration

In our co-creation session with young Latinos, they elevated stories such as:

“Did you know Latinos are predicted to be 70% of new homeowners in the next 17 years? Growing up I always envisioned one day buying my parents their dream home so that they can have something to call their own. Especially since they left their country to come build a better life for their children. Ownership is important to me because it builds generational wealth.“

Alex J.

Influencer

“One of my biggest goals is to become a homeowner - and it is mindblowing to realize that 70% of homeowners within the next 17 years are said to be Latino! I am excited to contribute to this statistic in the near future. Latino homeowners - how did that process go for you? Where did you start?”

Becky U.

Workshop Participant

“Growing up, the actors on the big screen played a huge role in who I wanted to be. Unfortunately, looking back I never felt truly represented. Latinos drive 20% of box office sales, but are only 5% of leads! If we want our children to grow up seeing how big they could be, we need to make a change.”

Additional Inspiration

These additional examples from the

Purpose team can help inspire your storytelling.

Latinos will make up 70% of all new homeowners in the next 17 years – and I’m going to be one of them. Growing up, I knew my home was a safe space for my community – where we could celebrate our holidays, and come together as neighbors and extended family. I can’t wait to host my parents and our family & friends in my home one day. Where did you find Latino community as a kid? Share your story, too.

Everyone in my family is funny- we’re always telling stories and cracking jokes. My uncle was born to be on stage - he is overflowing with stories. But Latinos only make 5% of leads at the movie theatre! Our stories aren’t being told - even though we drive 20% of box office sales. If we want to be represented on the big screen in the future, we have to do it ourselves. Share a family legend in the comments below!

Did you know 84% of Latinos in the United States only speak English? I stay connected to my culture through my family, our holidays, and of course: our food. But my brother and I decided we were done being left out of the jokes - we are learning Spanish together. Coming from two cultures is our superpower - and being bilingual will be, too. Sign up for updates to hear stories from other Latinos who are connecting with their roots.

01 Storytelling Priorities

We explored the landscape of storytelling threads and themes surrounding the Latin community's socioeconomic status in the US, intending to amplify multiple narratives within this overarching theme. Through collaborative efforts with our partners, we pinpointed the key themes that demand the movement's focus.

Authenticity

“Latino writers telling authentic stories increases appeal to US Latino audience seeking positive representation.”

As young consumers demand authentic content that breaks stereotypes and reflects their reality, Hollywood must include Latinos to prevent losing viewership to platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat.

Catalyst for Action

“Hollywood must embrace Latino consumers and promote inclusivity for a vibrant entertainment future.”

The Latino community seeks a campaign that inspires action, ignites motivation, and resonates with their intelligence. They desire a message that speaks to them as equals, not as subordinates.

Balancing Contributions and Individuality

“Latinos, the fastest-growing contributors to the US economy, swiftly enter the labor market, driving $3.2 trillion of the nation's GDP.”

Young Latinos acknowledge their substantial contributions to the economy and culture. However, they seek recognition beyond hard work, aspiring to be viewed as multifaceted individuals free to pursue their passions.
