Discovering the pBuzz

F, G, A, Bb, B, C - try playing each note in whole notes with your neighbor!

Breathing and Buzzing

Now that you have some new friends and a little information about the pBuzz, let’s do some breathing together so we can prepare our breath for the pBuzz!

  • Box Breaths: 4 beats in as arms come up; hold for 4 with arms high; 4 beats out as arms come down.
  • Buzz Exhale: purse your lips together, leaving a small aperture for air to vibrate your lips.

Color Coded for Scaffolding

    • Examine the notes and colors on your pBuzz. The higher pitched notes are closer to the mouthpiece, and the lower notes are a longer reach with the slide extended.
    • The color coded system on the pBuzz matches the Orff System of color - which means that your chromonote bells, boomwhackers, and glockenspiels will have the same color system.
    • In my classroom, I use color note stickers to help students find the notes on pianos, guitars, ukuleles, and basses as well.

Make sure to TONGUE at the Start of Notes

It is important to begin each note above with a “Too” sound. Your tongue starts against the back of your top teeth then lowers to release the air into a strong buzz sound.

Let’s Try Switching Between the Notes

Now that you have had some time to build your tone on F and G, take a couple minutes to practice with your neighbor on A, Bb, B, and C.

What color are each of these notes? Do they sound higher or lower than the F or G?

10

11 of 34

Use your tongue to separate notes as you play the pBuzz.

C is Red and B natural is Pink. Let’s try playing whole notes on each note, but let’s breathe for 4 beats in between each pitch to give our embouchure a little resting time.

What is an ostinato?

An OSTINATO is a continually repeated musical phrase or rhythm.

Examples of OSTINATO:

Bolero by Ravel is one of the most famous in Classical Music, and repeats this rhythm:

In modern music, Paint the Town Red by Doja Cat has a sample of “Walk on By” used as an ostinato.

15

16 of 34

Let’s start with some Simple Patterns in 2 chord songs.

In Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” there is an Ostinato that goes:

C G C G | A E A E

Now, let’s simplify this to allow for breathing and the basic range of the pBuzz:

||:C G C G | A sh! A sh! :||

16

→ A

C Am

In this song, the pBuzz can play a simplified ostinato/riff based on the bass line in the song Circles.

The piano part could also be modified for playing on the pBuzz.

Circles by Post Malone

We couldn’t turn it around

‘Til we were upside down

I’ll be the bad guy now

But no, I ain’t too proud

I couldn’t be there

Even when I tried

You don’t believe it

We do this every time

Seasons change and our love went cold

Feed the flame ‘cause we can’t let it go

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away

I dare you to do something

I’m waiting on you again

So I don’t take the blame

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away, run away

Let go, I got a feeling that it's time to let go

I say so, I knew that this was doomed from the get-go

You thought that it was special, special

But it was not special, special

And I still hear the echoes (The echoes)

I got a feeling that it's time to let it go, let it go

Seasons change and our love went cold

Feed the flame 'cause we can't let it go

Run away, but we're running in circles

Run away, run away

I dare you to do something

I'm waiting on you again, So I don't take the blame

Run away, but we're running in circles

Run away, run away, run away

Maybe you don't understand what I'm going through, It's only me, What you got to lose?

Make up your mind, tell me, What are you gonna do? It's only me, Let it go

(end on C chord after last chorus)

I stay out too late

Got nothing in my brain

That's what people say, mm-mm

That's what people say, mm-mm

I go on too many dates

But I can't make 'em stay

At least that's what people say, mm-mm

That's what people say, mm-mm

But I keep cruisin'

Can't stop, won't stop movin'

It's like I got this music in my mind

Sayin', "It's gonna be alright"

23

Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play

And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

I shake it off, I shake it off (whoo-hoo-hoo)

Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break, break, break

And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake

Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

I shake it off, I shake it off (whoo-hoo-hoo)

*The G will be played an octave lower on pBuzz unless you blow faster air to reach the next partial. Alternatively, you can leave out the G to breathe as needed.

Verse 1

I want you to stay, ‘Til I’m in the grave ‘Til I rot Away, dead and buried,

‘Til I’m in the casket you carry

If you go, I’m going too, uh, ‘cause it was always you, and if i’m turnin’ blue,

Please don’t save me, nothing’ left to lose without my baby

Birds of a feather, we should stick together,

I know, I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone,

Can’t change the weather, might not be forever,

but if it's forever, it’s even better

25

And I don’t know what I’m cryinfor, I don’t think I could love you more, It might not be long, but, baby, I … I’ll love you ‘til the day that I die, til the day that I die, ‘til the light leaves my eyes,Til the day that I die

26 of 34

Verse 2

I want you to see, hmm, ‘how you look to me, hmm, you wouldn’t believe me if I told ya, you would keep the compliments I throw ya,

But you’re so full of it, uh, tell me it’s a bit, oh, say you don’t see it, your mind’s polluted, say you wanna quit, don’t be stupid

And I don’t know what I’m cryinfor, I don’t think I could love you more, might not be long, but, baby, I … don’t wanna say goodbye

26

Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know, I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone, Can’t change the weather, might not be forever, but if it's’ forever, it’s even better

I knew you in another life, you had that same look in your eyes, I love you, don’t act so surprised
