NCSD HER Plan - Purpose

The purpose of Nenana City School District’s Environmental Health, Efficiency, and Resiliency Plan is to:

  • Increase facility operating efficiencies through the reduction of fuel and energy consumption
  • Increase facility environmental health through an increase in air quality and decrease in the presence of toxic chemicals
  • Increase facility resiliency through the addition of operational redundancies to insure heat, energy, and water supply in emergency situations

HER Plan Focus - Increase Efficiencies

Nenana City School District commits to decreasing fuel consumption of District-owned facilities 30% by 2030. NCSD intends to:

  • Develop a District awareness campaign by 2024, to be implemented by 2025
  • Conduct an energy audit on all District facilities by 2025
  • Wherever feasible, install smart meters to track fuel consumption and output rates
  • Connect District properties to the City of Nenana’s biomass plant by 2025
  • Replace all aging, inefficient pumps and motors with high efficiency pumps and motors by 2028
  • Replace all aging, inefficient boilers with high efficiency boilers by 2030
  • Where feasible, electrify appliances
  • Replace old insulation and add more effective insulation and siding/roofing on District facilities by 2030

HER Plan Focus - Increase Efficiencies

Nenana City School District commits to decreasing energy consumption of District-owned facilities 20% by 2030. NCSD intends to:

  • Develop a District awareness campaign by 2024, to be implemented by 2025
  • Replace all existing non-LED lighting with high efficiency LED lighting by 2030
  • Automate all facility lighting with motion sensors and timers by 2030
  • Develop a plan for on-site energy generation by 2025
    • Explore renewable energy options that are cost effective in the short, medium, and long term
    • Explore selling energy back to utilities
    • Explore utilizing electric appliances in conjunction with or supplemental to non-electric appliances
  • Implement on-site energy generation plans by 2030

HER Plan - Increase Facility Health

In order to provide a safe and healthy learning and working environment, Nenana City School District commits to increasing the environmental health of District facilities. NCSD intends to:

  • Install HVAC systems in all District facilities that include MIRV-13 or better filtration of 100% of facility air by 2030
  • Calibrate HVAC systems to maintain neutral or positive air pressure in all District facilities by 2026
  • Eliminate all highly toxic environmental chemicals in District facilities, including proper disposal, by 2028

HER Plan - Increase Facility Resiliency

In order to provide a continuity of services and emergency community shelter and services, Nenana City School District commits to increasing the resiliency of District facilities. NCSD intends to:

  • Equip backup boilers in appropriate District facilities, and ensure existing backup boilers are operational by 2025
  • Equip HVAC systems in appropriate District facilities with backup pumps and/or motors where appropriate, and ensure existing backup pumps and motors are operational by 2025
  • Develop and implement an energy resiliency plan by 2024
  • Explore and consider on-site energy generation and storage options
    • Backup multi-fuel generators
    • Renewable energy generation
  • Explore and consider on-site water storage and heating options
