What is wrestling?

  • Wrestling is a sport that involves grappling, takedowns, throws, and pins.
  • It is one of the oldest forms of sport
  • It combines balance, strength, and stamina

Wrestling as a middle school sport

  • Weight classes are: 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 106, 112, 119, 126, 135, 145, 156, 168, 185, 215, 275 (HWT)
  • There are two levels of participation:
    • AA - Top performer at each weight class
    • A - All other wrestlers

Weight Classes

  • Competing against someone at or around their own weight.
  • Wrestlers must weigh in at or under their weight class
  • Weight classes promote fair competition among wrestlers
  • Wrestlers will be allowed 1 extra pound for December and 1 extra pound for Tourney to follow middle school growth

Equipment Needed

  • Wrestlers will practice in T-shirt (tucked in) and shorts.
  • Wrestlers will be issued team singlet (for meets) and headgear (wrestlers may use own headgear)
  • Wrestling Shoes - usually can be found at sporting good stores or Play It Again Sports (Asics)
  • Mouthpiece - (for braces) - mouthpiece must fully fit inside mouth and must cover braces area. (top or bottom only braces just need coverage on top or bottom)

Important for Meets

  • Meets usually begin around 4:15 (pending busses).
  • Meets typically run 45 minutes to 1 hour and a half.
  • Wrestlers on AA will usually have a match.
  • Wrestlers on A will match up based on availability and rotation at weight class.

Sportsmanship and Eligibility

  • Sportsmanship
    • Unsportsmanlike conduct is not acceptable at our level.
    • Coaches, Athletes, and Parents must show respect to our officials and opponents.
  • Eligibility
    • Run every two weeks. Must be passing all classes
      • Step 1 Warning; Step 2 No meets; Step 3 No practices
