AI Foundations
Understanding the building blocks before you build anything.
12
A 75-YEAR SPRINT
13
How we got here
Key milestones in the evolution of artificial intelligence
1950–2010
Decades of research
Turing test, expert systems, neural nets but nothing useful for normal humans.
2017
The Transformer
Google paper "Attention Is All You Need": the architecture behind every LLM today.
Nov 2022
ChatGPT launches
100M users in 2 months. Fastest consumer adoption in history. The "AI moment."
Today (2026)
Multimodal + Agents
MCP, agent ecosystems, real automations running real businesses. We're here.
What we’re actually talking about
01
What is a large language model?
A model trained on huge amounts of text. You give it words, it predicts the next words. That's the magic, and the limit. Everything called "AI" lately is built on this.
02
How most people use AI today
Open chat. Type a question. Copy the answer. Close the tab. That's the surface, and that's about 10% of what's possible. The majority of people are right here.
03
Who builds them?
Anthropic (Claude). OpenAI (ChatGPT). Google (Gemini). All variations of the same thing: different training data, different guardrails, different personalities. Pick one and learn it deeply.
04
What today is about
The other 90%. Projects, Skills, Agents. How to build something that runs without you. How to stop being the bottleneck in your own work.
14
What’s the difference?
STEP 1
Chat
Where everyone starts
Q&A, drafting, brainstorming. Worked great until I was re-pasting the same client context for the 5th time.
STEP 2
Cowork
When you needed to create a skill
Built a brain that knows every client. Daily Slack briefings from Gmail + calendar + Granola. Create Automated tasks.
STEP 3
Claude Code / Codex
When you needed to build
Build apps, create websites, create agents. Meta Ads Agent. Property mgmt automation. Business Brain bot.
15
Projects vs. Skills vs. Agents
Project
A shared context window for a specific campaign, program or workstream. Everything you paste in (briefs, transcripts, brand docs, team rosters) is available every time you open it.
Skill
A saved set of instructions that tells your model how to behave for a specific task type. Think of it like a job description for a repeatable output.
Agent
An AI that can take actions: browse the web, run code, call APIs, trigger automations. It doesn't just respond; it does things on your behalf.
16
Use for: an annual campaign, a program, anything with recurring context
Use for: donor thank-you notes, event recaps, newsletter drafts
Use for: automations, scheduled tasks, multi-step workflows
How to actually talk to AI
Chat is the interface
Every conversation, every project, every skill, every agent: you trigger them all through a chat box. The interface is simple. The leverage isn't.
What most people do wrong
"Give me a marketing plan." "Write me an email." No context. No goal. No constraints. Quality of input = quality of output. Stop hoping.
Real example: a monthly newsletter
17
Send. Watch what happens.
I put together our newsletter by hand each month and send it on the 1st. Help me design a workflow I can run myself. Ask what goes into it before suggesting steps
The five parts of a good prompt
01
Context
Who you are, your org, what's going on
02
Task
The one thing you want done
03
Audience
Who will read it
04
Constraints
Length, tone, what to avoid
05
Desired output
Exactly what you want back
18
THE FIVE PARTS
EXAMPLE PROMPT
01
I'm the marketing lead at a Jewish community nonprofit. I put our monthly newsletter together by hand.
02
Draft this month's newsletter from the program updates pasted below.
03
It goes to our members and donors.
04
Keep it under 400 words, warm and plain, with no jargon.
05
Give me a subject line, three short sections and one call to action.
End every prompt with: "Ask me anything you need before answering." That last line is the unlock.
02
