Basal cell carcinoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma
(BCC, rodent ulcer)
Definition: Locally malignant tumour arising from the basal cell layer of the epidermis of the skin and its appendages as hair follicles
Sites of origin: occur in skin exposed to sun (middle third of the face)
Mode of growth: slowly infiltrating, invading and destroying the surrounding structures till the bone but does not produces distant metastasis

Microscopic picture:
The dermis is infiltrated with masses of malignant epithelial cells forming nests of blue coloured cells characterized by:
-An outer columnar basal cells arranged in palisading (parallel) manner.
-An inner group of polyhedral, round, or spindle.
-the cells exhibits the criteria of malignancy….
Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
Definition: Malignant tumour of stratified squamous epithelium.
Sites of origin: Skin, lip, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, anal canal, vagina and cervix. It occurs also on top of squamous metaplasia.
Predisposing factors for SCC:
1- Chronic irritation. 2- Chronic exposure to sunlight.
3- Radiation. 4- Leukoplakia.
5- Seborrheic keratosis. 6- Papilloma and squamous metaplasia.
Malignant ulcer
The tumour is composed of:
Adenocarcinoma, colon
The tumour Shows:
1- Basophilic 2- Irregular 3- Variable in size and shape 4- Show depletion of goblet cells.
