2021

RDA AISBL is founded

A non-profit international organization under Belgian Law (AISBL), with the overall goal to support the RDA activities in Europe, and to take a part in the global RDA development.

  • EOSC FUTURE / RDA Domain Ambassador programme:
    • Over 11 RDA outputs have been leveraged, optimised, and implemented across a variety of tools and test beds.
    • Many of the awardees are now involved and engaged in RDA.
    • The Open Calls programme established a direct link with almost 100 highly connected, well-known individuals from over 40 organisations across 22 countries.

  • WorldFAIR
    • Building bridges with global experts from 11 disciplinary

and cross disciplinary case studies on FAIR data, many of who

are now active in RDA and use it as a platform for further

collaboration.

Objectives:

  • Define the position of the European office in coordinating the European regional engagement with RDA, and therefore, define the added value of RDA Europe, and value proposition for the European RDA community/regions,
  • define the types of support that the RDA Europe office will offer as part of the Support Framework in order to meet the strategic objective,
  • define the actions that the European Office will take in to identify additional needs of the European Community,
  • define the timeline and associated actions for the finalisation and formalisation the Support Framework.

  • Communications and Dissemination: Support (in-kind) in the organisation and facilitation of in person and virtual events
  • Outreach and Engagement: Highlighting of regional and European-level success stories and challenges via RDA Europe networks (social media, EC and EOSC networks, Horizon Europe projects, etc.), suggestions for speakers, global membership outreach.
  • Local RDA community building: Support (in-kind) in building and animating the local, country-specific community by attending local events and introducing and ‘translating’ RDA.
  • RDA onboarding: Helping interested regions (including ‘legacy nodes’) to coordinate with regional stakeholders, advocate for their needs and facilitating the transition to engaged, committed or partner region.

  • Regional challenges to global solutions:
    • leveraging RDA TIGER resources (grants and funding, landscape, facilitation, communication, and output support) and RDA Europe staff expertise to facilitate the participation in relevant WGs or creation of new WGs that address local challenges and raise them into global, cross-disciplinary and adoptable solutions.
    • Highlight the existence of the tightly-knit network experts and promote their potential contributions to the coherent FAIR policy development on the national, regional and global levels”.
  • .... and regional solutions to global challenges: RDA Europe can highlight and broker FAIR-enabling/RDM-supporting solutions from Europe to the global RDA community (and also broker between the different European national communities).

Next steps

Actions & Tentative timeline:

  • Map the European countries/regions and their needs and support them in progressing to their next stage of engaging with RDA as part of a formal agreement.
  • Refine the types of support outlined in this document based on available skills and resources.
  • Draft an action plan to realise the strategy.
  • Discuss the usefulness of a RDA Europe Taskforce to lead the requirements gathering process. Landscape analysis and 1:1 outreach to the region representatives to gather individual needs
  • Finalisation of the Support Framework.
  • Inclusion of the Support Framework in formal agreements of European regions with the RDA Foundation.
