The correct answer is…

D

5 of 12

BUT WHY?

6 of 12

How do we do that?

To mark your script for meaning and emphasis you must seek to understand what the character is saying.

What do they want? Why do they want it? How are they attempting to get it?

7 of 12

Words, words, words

What words jump out to you about in the piece?

8 of 12

Tactics

Think about the monologue and what the character wants.

Who are they talking to? (3 options: The Audience, another person, or themselves)

Are they trying to:

ComplainBegRant

Bruise

Tell off

What verb do you see them using? Are there more than one?

9 of 12

Mark it up!

  • Take those words that stand out to you and underline them.
  • Are you going to keep questions as questions or are you changing them into statements?
  • Is there a place where the tactic or tone switches? Draw a vertical line before that moment so you know to “change gears”

  • Auditory

Play to your strengths

  • Visual: Write out the monologue
  • Kinesthetic: Move around and “block every moment” (also physically writing out your monologue helps)
  • Auditory: Record yourself delivering the monologue and listen back.
